Antananarivo

Discover the Capital of Madagascar

Antananarivo, or Tana, is the hilly and historic capital of Madagascar, serving as the cultural and political heart of the nation with its blend of traditional Merina houses, French colonial architecture, and iconic landmarks like the Rova palace complex.

Explore the city in the upper town (“La Haute ville”), where you can find Palaces (the Queen’s Palace, the ancient Prime Minister Rainilaiarivony Palace and the ancient Justice Palace), cathedrals and the residential area of (mostly) ancient noblemen families. From here, you can enjoy a pleasant perspective of the city below far away from the bustling downtown. This is a great place for shopping to purchase souvenirs.

Antananarivo, often shortened to Tana, is the historic, political, and economic capital of Madagascar, known for its dramatic topography built across a series of steep hills and its blend of traditional Merina architecture and French colonial influence.

Key Features and Identity:

  • Geographical Center: Located in the central highlands at an altitude of approximately 1,280 meters (4,200 ft), Tana is the highest capital city among island nations. Its terrain is divided into the Upper Town (Haute-Ville) and Lower Town (Bas-Ville).
  • Historical Significance: Founded in the 17th century by the Merina King Andrianjaka, its name translates to “City of a Thousand” (referring to the soldiers guarding it). It was the seat of the powerful Kingdom of Imerina before becoming the capital of the French colony and, ultimately, independent Madagascar in 1960.
  • Cultural Hub: It is the most populous city and the heart of the country’s education, art, and administrative life.

Major Landmarks

  • Rova of Antananarivo (Queen’s Palace): This fortified royal palace complex, perched on the city’s highest hill, is the most iconic structure and a testament to the Merina monarchy, although the main building was severely damaged by fire in 1995.
  • Andafiavaratra Palace: Located near the Rova, this former residence of the Prime Minister now houses a museum with royal artifacts rescued from the Rova fire.
  • Analakely Market: A bustling central market and the heart of local commerce and daily life.
  • Lake Anosy: A heart-shaped artificial lake in the center of the city, framed by jacaranda trees and featuring the War Memorial.
  • Royal Hill of Ambohimanga: A UNESCO World Heritage Site just outside the city, it is a sacred hill and the former capital and spiritual seat of the Imerina Kingdom.
  • Colonial Architecture: The city features grand buildings from the colonial era, including the Gare de Soarano (old railway station) and various cathedrals.
