Madu Ganga River Safari

Sail Downstream

Madu Ganga or (Madu River) wetland spreads across 915 hectares, out of which 770 hectares is covered with water. Sail downstream for about a kilometre, the river opens its doors to 36 spectacular islands covering the rest 145 hectares. The inhabitants of these islands are mostly traditional fishermen and to some extent they are engaged in some traditional cottage industries such as producing peeled cinnamon and cinnamon oil.

The Madu Ganga River Safari is a highly popular eco-tourism activity in Sri Lanka, offering a fascinating journey through a complex and biodiverse wetland ecosystem.

Located near the town of Balapitiya on the southern coast, the Madu Ganga (Madu River) is an estuary that widens into a lagoon dotted with approximately 64 small islands. The area is a designated Ramsar wetland, known for one of the last remaining tracts of pristine mangrove forests in the country.

Key Highlights of the Safari

The boat safari typically lasts 1 to 2 hours and is a blend of nature, culture, and unique local experiences.

Highlight Description
Mangrove Forests & Wildlife Glide through narrow tunnels formed by the dense mangrove forests. The ecosystem is a biodiversity hotspot, home to over 300 species of plants and over 250 species of animals. Keep an eye out for monitor lizards, crocodiles (rarely sighted but present), monkeys, and a variety of aquatic and migratory birds like kingfishers, cormorants, and egrets.
Kothduwa Temple Visit an ancient Buddhist temple located on one of the larger inhabited islands. This temple, also known as the Kothduwa Rajamaha Viharaya, is of historical significance and is home to a sacred fig tree. Visitors are expected to dress respectfully (covering shoulders and legs) and remove hats and shoes.
Cinnamon Island (Kurundu Doowa) Stop at an island where you can learn about the traditional cultivation and processing of cinnamon. Local villagers will often demonstrate how cinnamon bark is peeled and how cinnamon oil is produced. You may also get a chance to sample cinnamon tea or buy local products.
Natural Fish Therapy Experience a natural “fish spa” where you can dip your feet into a fenced-off area of the river or a fish tank. Hundreds of small fish, often Gourami, will nibble gently at the dead skin on your feet for a unique and relaxing foot massage.
Local Life & Fishing Observe the traditional fishing communities, their methods (like prawn farming), and the simple, serene lifestyle of the families living on the islands.
