Marojejy National Park: The Untamed Heart of Madagascar

Discover a true wilderness haven at Marojejy National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Madagascar’s most thrilling destinations for adventurous nature lovers.

Towering granite mountains, pristine rainforests, and an unparalleled array of unique wildlife make the Marojejy Massif an absolute must-see. This is not a typical safari—it’s an immersive trekking experience into a mountain environment virtually untouched by time.

Why Visit Marojejy?

  • Home of the Silky Sifaka: Marojejy is famous as the stronghold of the critically endangered Silky Sifaka (Propithecus candidus). Spotting this stunning, all-white lemur—known locally as the “angel of the forest”—is the ultimate reward of the multi-day hike.
  • Four Forests, One Climb: The park protects a rare vertical sweep of habitats, allowing you to hike through four distinct forest types, from humid lowland rainforest up to high-altitude montane scrub, climaxing at the summit of the massif (2,132m).
  • Unrivaled Biodiversity: With over 12 lemur species, 125 bird species (including the brilliantly colored Helmet Vanga), and the highest diversity of reptiles and amphibians of any protected area in Madagascar, Marojejy is a true biological treasure chest.

The Marojejy Trek: An Adventure to the Summit

A visit to Marojejy is defined by its rugged and rewarding trekking. The journey involves multi-day hikes with basic but comfortable overnight stays in designated trail camps.

  • Base Camps: Treks utilize a series of progressively higher camps (Mantella, Marojejia, Simpona), allowing for wildlife viewing and exploration at different altitudes.
  • The Summit Challenge: The final ascent to the Marojejy Peak is strenuous but offers incredible panoramic views of the mountainous interior, stretching out to the Indian Ocean.
  • Mandatory Guides: Local guides and porters are required for entry, ensuring your safety and providing essential support and expertise for finding the park’s elusive wildlife.

If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure that showcases Madagascar’s raw, natural beauty and its most iconic and endangered species, Marojejy is waiting.
