Nuwara Eliya

A Colonial City

Nuwara Eliya is often referred to as ‘Little England’. Nuwara Eliya has a climate unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka. Due to its high elevation, it offers a cooler and more invigorating climate than lower regions. Colonised by the British, the outskirts of Sri Lanka’s highest town, still retain their ‘ye olde worlde’ feel and many of the original hotels still retain their grandiose colonial style. Famous for its horse racing, Nuwara Eliya also boasts the impressive Golf Club which dates back to 1889. Stepping back in time when life was slightly more sedate, it is worthwhile visiting the Clubhouse to observe the photographs of life in Nuwara Eliya in years gone by. Rose gardens and abundant vegetable stalls crowd the sides of the road, whilst spectacular scenery will accompany you on the journey from Kandy.

Nuwara Eliya is a charming city in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, renowned for its cool, temperate climate, sprawling tea plantations, and distinct colonial-era architecture, earning it the nickname “Little England.”

Situated at an altitude of over 6,000 feet, the city was a favored hill station during the British colonial period, and its heritage is still visible in its Tudor-style buildings, golf course, and historic hotels.

Key Highlights and Attractions:

  • Tea Country Capital: Nuwara Eliya is the most important location for tea production in Sri Lanka. Visitors can tour working tea factories like the Pedro Tea Estate to learn about the process of making “Ceylon tea” and participate in tea tasting.
  • Colonial Charm: The town center is characterized by well-preserved colonial buildings, including the Grand Hotel, the Hill Club, and the old Post Office, giving it a nostalgic, almost European feel.
  • Natural Beauty and Parks:
    • Lake Gregory: A central reservoir where visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, and water sports.
    • Victoria Park: A well-maintained public park popular for strolls and birdwatching.
    • Hakgala Botanical Garden: One of the largest botanical gardens in Sri Lanka, known for its diverse flora.
  • Waterfalls: The surrounding area is rich with spectacular waterfalls, including Devon Falls, St. Clair’s Falls (the “Little Niagara of Sri Lanka”), and Lover’s Leap Waterfall.
  • Horton Plains National Park: Nuwara Eliya serves as the main base for visiting this key wildlife and nature area, which features the famous cliff edge known as World’s End and Baker’s Falls.
  • Ramayana Sites: The region also contains Hindu spiritual sites, such as the Seetha Amman Kovil, believed to be a location connected to the Hindu epic, the Ramayana.

The city is a unique blend of Sri Lankan mountain landscapes and the architectural remnants of its colonial past, making it an essential stop on the central hill country travel route.
