Taste Malagasy Tea
Explore the area surrounding Sahambavy Lake, nestled at the foot of a hill. The Lac Hôtel has a breathtaking view of the island’s unique tea plantation (520 hectares) which spreads out as far as the eye can see.
Here you can learn about the process of tea making and taste some of the black and green tea produced here. You can also buy some to take home.
Sahambavy is a rural municipality in the central highlands of Madagascar, known primarily for two things: its unique tea plantations and its location on the famous Fianarantsoa-Côte Est (FCE) railway line.
The Sahambavy Tea Estate
Sahambavy is home to Madagascar’s only commercial tea plantation. The estate, which was established in the 1970s with cuttings from Kenya, has a significant presence in the local economy.
- Landscape: The plantation is a striking sight, with rolling hills blanketed in neat rows of lush green tea bushes. The name “Sahambavy” itself translates to “the women’s field,” a reference to the landscape’s soft curves and the women who traditionally do the hand-picking.
- Tea Production: The estate produces both black and green tea, with most of the production being exported. Visitors can take guided tours of the plantation and the processing factory to learn about the entire process, from the picking of the leaves to the final packaging.
- Visitor Experience: The tour often includes a tea tasting at the end, allowing you to sample the distinctive, full-bodied flavor of Malagasy tea.
The FCE Railway and Lake Sahambavy
The FCE train journey is a major draw for visitors to Sahambavy.
- A Vital Stop: Sahambavy is one of the main stops on the long and scenic train journey between Fianarantsoa and Manakara. The station is a hive of activity, with local vendors selling food and drinks to passengers on the train.
- Lake Sahambavy: The tea plantation is situated beside a large, serene lake of the same name. The tranquil setting offers a peaceful contrast to the sometimes chaotic journey on the FCE train. The area is home to the Lac Hôtel, a unique hotel built partly on stilts over the lake, providing a stunning view of the surrounding landscape.
In summary, Sahambavy is a scenic and important stop for anyone traveling the FCE railway, offering a unique glimpse into Madagascar’s agricultural industry and a tranquil lakeside setting surrounded by the country’s only tea plantations
