Azerai La Residence, Hue

Hue’s premier boutique sits in the former French governor’s splendid art deco residence across the Perfume River from the World Heritage Listed Forbidden City. Rooms in the period main building have balconies with lovely sunset rooms and come with original 1930s French fittings. Two modern neo-deco annexes (built in 2005) extend either side of the former mansion, overlooking lawned gardens and the river. Rooms in the modern annexes are furnished and retro-refitted in the art deco style – with dark woods, rounded lines and balconies with river or garden views. The original colonial suites are three times the price, but have more style and include the huge Voyage en Chine suite in lush teak wood and French painted ceramic tiles, fronted by a crescent of floor to ceiling bay windows leading to a balcony, and with a gorgeous glaze-tiled bathroom lit by a mandala-like roundel window.
