Manvar Sevan, The Desert Camp
An Authentic Wilderness Retreat in the Thar Desert
Located 6 km from the main resort to ensure total seclusion, Manvar Sevan is a spectacular tented camp set amidst the undulating sand dunes of the Thar Desert. Designed to evoke the spirit of a royal caravan, the camp offers a “back-to-nature” experience without compromising on comfort. Between the hours of sunrise and sunset, the desert landscape undergoes a breathtaking transformation, offering guests a front-row seat to the elemental beauty and profound silence of rural Rajasthan. It is a place where time slows down, and the only soundtrack is the desert wind.
Rooms & Accommodation
The camp consists of 30 safari-style tents arranged in a traditional semi-circle, designed to provide a sense of community while maintaining private views of the wilderness.
-
Safari Tents: These are “mini-marquees” built with double-layered canvas and custom-designed block-printed linings. The interiors feature polished teak camping-style furniture, rich jute rugs, and spacious beds.
-
Modern Comforts: Despite the remote setting, each tent features a fully tiled attached bathroom with running hot and cold water. For cooler desert nights, electric blowers are provided to keep the space cozy.
-
Private Sit-outs: Every tent includes an outdoor seating area, perfect for enjoying a “sundowner” as the sky turns vibrant shades of pink and orange over the dunes.
Dining
Dining at Manvar Sevan is a celebration of local flavors and traditional Rajasthani hospitality.
The Durbar Hall: The central dining tent, or “Courtiers’ Hall,” serves as the heart of the camp. Guests can enjoy a grand buffet or a la carte menu featuring authentic Indian and Rajasthani specialties.
Al Fresco Courtyard: For a truly immersive experience, meals can be served in the outdoor courtyard. Dining under the vast, unpolluted desert sky, lit by the glow of a campfire, makes every meal an adventure.
Farm-to-Table: The kitchen prioritizes local ingredients, offering guests a taste of the hearty, spice-rich dishes that have sustained desert travelers for centuries.
Facilities
Killa Bhawan is a boutique heritage property where the facilities are designed to enhance the historic atmosphere of the 12th-century fort rather than overwhelm it with modern distractions. It is a place for “unplugging” and soaking in the desert ambiance.
-
The Sunset Terraces: The “jewel in the crown” of Killa Bhawan. These interconnected rooftop terraces are spread across the fort’s ancient bastions. Scattered with low-slung traditional seating and vibrant silk cushions, they offer 360-degree views of the Golden City and the Thar Desert.
-
Heritage Lounges: Between the rooms, you will find intimate alcoves and shared lounge spaces decorated with museum-quality Rajput antiques, old maps, and hand-woven rugs. These areas serve as peaceful reading nooks away from the desert heat.
-
The KB Lodge & Shop: Located just a short walk away in the lower town, the sister concern “KB Lodge” features a curated boutique shop. Here, guests can find high-quality pashminas, local sandstone carvings, and traditional Rajasthani textiles sourced directly from artisan cooperatives.
-
Travel Desk & Concierge: Despite its historic setting, the hotel provides modern travel support. The staff are experts at arranging “off-the-beaten-track” desert experiences, private guided tours of the Jain Temples, and logistics for the next leg of your Rajasthan journey.
-
Complimentary Services: To ensure a comfortable stay in the remote desert, the hotel provides complimentary mineral water, high-speed Wi-Fi in common areas, and a personalized “breakfast on order” service that can be served anywhere on the terraces.
Activities
The camp serves as a base for exploring the unique ecosystem of the 250-acre protected desert area.
-
Thrilling Desert Safaris: Embark on a Jeep safari with experienced local drivers to explore hidden trails. This is the best way to spot desert flora, rare birds, and wildlife like the Chinkara (Indian Gazelle).
-
Camel Treks: For a slower pace, guests can enjoy a traditional camel safari through the soft sand dunes, led by local Rabari herders who have lived in these sands for generations.
-
Village Walks: Visit nearby settlements to learn about the desert’s social fabric, visiting local artisans and learning how communities thrive in this arid environment.
-
Stargazing: With no light pollution for miles, the camp offers some of the best stargazing in India. After dinner, the sky reveals a dazzling display of constellations.
Earth Trip Opinion
Manvar Sevan is the quintessential “Earth Trip” desert experience. It avoids the noisy “party” atmosphere of some larger desert camps in favor of genuine tranquility and environmental respect. It is perfectly positioned as a “Superior” midway point between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. For our travelers, the highlights are always the expert-led safaris and the magical feeling of being completely disconnected from the modern world
Sustainability & Community
Manvar Sevan is a pioneer in responsible desert tourism, focusing on the preservation of both the land and its people.
-
Wildlife Conservation: The camp is situated within a 250-acre private conservation area where hunting is strictly prohibited, allowing local wildlife to flourish.
-
Community Empowerment: Manvar works closely with the local Rabari and Rajput communities, providing stable employment as guides, drivers, and staff. They also support local schools and medical facilities.
-
Eco-Conscious Operations: The camp is seasonal (closed from April to September), allowing the land to recover during the harsh summer months. They use glass water bottles to minimize plastic waste and employ traditional building techniques that respect the desert terrain.
