Sanak Retreat Bali

Sanak Retreat Bali is a tranquil mountain sanctuary located in the village of Kayuputih, near Munduk in Northern Bali. Known for its “Handpicked with Humanity in Mind” philosophy, the retreat offers a humble yet luxurious escape away from the island’s bustling tourist hubs. Set against a backdrop of three majestic volcanoes and sprawling emerald rice paddies, it provides a soulful connection to the “real Bali” through authentic hospitality and a deep respect for the surrounding landscape.

Rooms & Accommodation

The retreat features 11 spacious wooden bungalows and a private villa, all elevated on stilts to maximize views and maintain a light footprint on the land. Accommodations include one-bedroom Rice Paddy Bungalows, two-bedroom Sunset/Sunrise Bungalows with two-story layouts, and the expansive Sanak House, a three-bedroom private enclave with its own swimming pool and meditation deck. The interiors blend minimalist chic with traditional Indonesian aesthetics, utilizing reclaimed teak wood, handcrafted batik textiles, and “nurturing comfort” without modern distractions like televisions.

Dining

Dining at Sanak Kitchen is a culinary tribute to Balinese heritage and fresh, organic produce. The menu focuses on traditional Indonesian fare with international “comfort food” twists, using ingredients sourced 90% from the immediate neighborhood and the retreat’s own organic garden. Guests can enjoy communal-style dining, private chef services in their bungalows, or unique experiences like “floating breakfasts” and scenic rice paddy picnics.

 Facilities

The heart of the resort is a stunning freshwater infinity pool that blends seamlessly into the green horizon of the valley. For wellness, the Heal Spa offers holistic therapies and reflexology in four treatment rooms open to the elements, while the Sarang Yoga Pavilion provides a serene space for daily meditation and movement. Other facilities include a charming library, a boutique shop selling local curiosities, and a firepit for evening gatherings under the mountain stars.

Activities

Sanak encourages guests to “unplug” through a variety of nature-based and cultural activities. Adventurous travelers can embark on guided jungle treks, mountain bike through clove and coffee plantations, or visit the nearby Munduk waterfalls. Cultural immersion is offered through Balinese cooking classes, traditional kite-making, and “Canang Sari” (offering) decoration workshops. Guests can also witness or join the village children’s dance rehearsals, which take place at the resort twice a week.

Sustainability & Community

Founded by philanthropists, Sanak is a leader in socially sensitive tourism, employing nearly 100% of its staff from the local Buleleng region. The resort operates with a “Zero % Landfill” goal, utilizing an on-site recycling and sorting station and teaching the community how to create “Ecobricks” from unrecyclable plastic. Beyond environmental efforts, the retreat supports the local primary school with supplies and provides scholarships for village youth to pursue hospitality training, ensuring the resort’s success directly benefits its neighbors.
