This 10-day “Wild Hunan” itinerary is a journey through the stunning natural and cultural landscapes of central China, inspired by the ethereal karst mountains of Zhangjiajie (the floating peaks of the movie Avatar). The trip begins and ends in the capital, Changsha, with a focus on birdwatching at Yuelu Mountain and enjoying city spectacles. The core of the adventure is spent exploring the 690 square kilometer Wulingyuan Scenic Area, including riding cable cars to the pinnacles of the National Forest Park, walking the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, and visiting Tianmen Mountain, all while seeking out rare wildlife like the Giant Salamander and the iridescent Elliot’s Pheasant. The itinerary then shifts to the cultural beauty of Fenghuang Ancient Town and the mountainous Dehang Miao Village before concluding at Dongting Lake, a crucial wetland for migratory birds and the critically endangered Yangtze River Porpoise.

Film director James Cameron was so enchanted with the stunning landscapes of Zhangjiajie in Hunan that he used them as his floating Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar. They’re nearly as wild as his planet Pandora – sitting over a huge, protected area still pristine enough to maintain healthy populations of Asian black bears and clouded leopards. Zhangjiajie is one of a series of beautiful wild areas in this Chinese province famous for the loveliness of its Natural landscapes. From porpoise-swum Donting freshwater Lake to the rugged mountains around China’s most beautiful village, Fenghuang, here is an itinerary which takes in the most beautiful of Hunan’s wild landscapes.
