Day 2 – Nicaragua

Today you will arrive in Nicaragua.

Welcome to Nicaragua, land of lakes and volcanoes! You arrive at Managua airport, where you receive fast track assistance for customs procedure. You will be welcomed and transferred to the colonial city of León. Travel time of an hour and half (95 kms). Rest of the day at leisure.
Loen is seen by many as the intellectual centre of Nicaragua, León offers energy and beauty in equal measure. A picturesque colonial town dating back to the 1600’s, it has grown into a city full of political spirit, art, great food and buzzing nightlife. The city has a fascinating history, having been relocated from its original location at Leon Viejo, which you can still visit today. The historic centre of Leon is filled with stunning colonial architecture and museums, whilst nearby you’ll find fantastic beaches and volcanic landscapes which are perfect for adventure seekers.

Once home to the historic San Francisco Convent, this lovingly converted building could be one of Nicaragua’s most beautiful hotels. Day 3 – Leon

After breakfast you will be transferred from León to the Pacific Bay of Las Peñitas, where you can find wetland, famous for its turtle and bird nesting. Your boatsman will find the best way to cut through the inlet to the Pacific Ocean. You are likely to encounter impressive flora and fauna, to be placed into context by your guide. In season, you might even see the elusive Olive Ridley Sea Turtle.
In the afternoon enjoy walking tour of Leon.

Day 4 Leon> Matagalpa

In the morning: Optional
Volcano Boarding at Cerro Negro
Take on one of Nicaragua’s most iconic experiences as you go boarding down the side of an active volcano! The experience starts with an off-road transfer from Leon city, followed by a one-hour hike to the top of the Cerro Negro volcano, during which your guide will teach you some of the geology of the area. Once at the top, safety instructions and a short practical training are given before starting your thrilling descent. No experience is necessary, and you can either sit down or stand up, depending on how brave you’re feeling!
Today you head to the north of the country, where you stay in Selva Negra hotel for a couple of nights. During your stay there, you have the chance to join some optional shared tours arranged from your hotel.
Matagalpa is often referred to as the “Pearl of the Nort” and a center of Nicaragua’s coffee production, Matagalpa sits surrounded by hills and mountains in the northern part of the country. Although one of Nicaragua’s larger cities, Matagalpa retains a laid-back and welcoming atmosphere, as well some good hotels, restaurants and museums dotted around its hilly streets. It’s a comfortable base from which to explore the beautiful surrounding area, where you’ll find coffee farms, indigenous communities, waterfalls and incredible mountain views.

A mountain resort in a glorious cloud forest setting, Selva Negra forms part of a sustainable coffee plantation and is a nature lover’s paradise. The plantation is still run by descendants of the original German settlers who brought the coffee trade to Nicaragua, and retains some German style in both the architecture and the food served. The private cabins and rooms are set amongst the forest, each with outdoor space and modern facilities so you can feel at home and close to nature. The surrounding forests are great for hiking, and are home to monkeys, sloths, wild cats and a variety of birds.

Day 5 – Matagalpa

Today you will visit to Cerro Apante immerse you in a variety of ecosystems, breathtaking views, forests and rural communities. Apante is known to be as one of the hidden treasures in northern Nicaragua for hikes. The natural reserve borders with the city of Matagalpa; but throughout the 8 hours tour, you will pass through the beautiful mountainous surroundings just north of Matagalpa, with several coffee farms. Then, it is time to head for the open fields where a picnic lunch will be enjoyed; continue to the summit, to a viewpoint called Cerro El Plomo, with panoramic views over the surrounding villages. The tour ends at San Ramón, where coffee growing, and community-based tourism are joining forces. From San Ramón, you will be transferred back to your hotel.
If you don’t enjoy long hiking, we can offer this option of visiting indigenous community.
El Chile is an indigenous community that is home to ‘Telares El Chile’ – a weaving workshop where local women became ambassadors for one of the most representative community traditions. You’ll learn about the history of this remarkable group of women with a bilingual local guide, and they’ll invite you to get involved in the weaving process, making products as purses, backpacks, carpets and bedspreads. After visiting the community and meeting some of the other traditional artisans, you’ll take a short hike to ‘Cerro El Chile’ viewpoint, giving you a 360-degree view of the valley and mountains. Before heading back to Matagalpa, you’ll share a traditional lunch with a local family so that you can learn about their lives and share your own stories.

Day 6: Matagalpa > Apoyo Lagoon

After breakfast you will transferred to the well-known Apoyo lagoon, where you overnight.
Travel time of 3 ½ hours (188 kms). A good option during this day, is to visit the shores of the volcanic lagoon from your hotel, to spend some time swimming at this unique place!
Apoyo Lagoon is formed some 20,000 years ago, this giant volcano crater lake is one of Nicaragua’s most beautiful natural landmarks. Tropical dry forests surround crystal-clear waters, making it a place of great serenity and incredibly diverse wildlife, including iguanas, hummingbirds and howler monkeys. Although the area is a protected reserve, you’ll find some excellent eco-friendly lodges around the shores of the lake, and there are great opportunities for hiking, swimming, kayaking and diving.

Located on the rim of the Apoyo Lagoon, Pacaya Lodge boasts stunning views over the forest canopy to the crater lake, with Granada and Lake Nicaragua just visible in the distance. The property proudly maintains a strict policy to avoid single use plastics, and invites guest to refill their bottles free of charge at an Oasis in the common areas. Day 7: Apoyo Lagoon > Ometep

On this day, you are transferred to San Jorge port, from where you receive assistance to board the ferry to beautiful Ometepe island. You do check in at your hotel, and during this afternoon you are picked up and head to Istian river, where you enjoy a guided kayak experience.
Ometepe once thought to have been the promised land by Aztec explorers, Isla de Ometepe is made up of two imposing volcanic cones rising out of western Lake Nicaragua. Ometepe has been inhabited for thousands of years due to its fertile volcanic soils, and evidence of its past can be found in archeologic sites dotted all around the island. Most travelers come here for the sandy beaches, clean waters, diverse wildlife and stunning scenery, with numerous
forests, waterfalls and springs in the island’s center. Ometepe is beautiful, unique and one of Nicaragua’s lesser-known highlights.
Take to the water as you kayak along the beautiful Istian River – home to a huge variety of Ometepe’s incredible wildlife. Together with an experienced guide, you’ll travel inland from the mouth of the river at Lake Nicaragua, a gentle journey of around three hours. Along the way you’re likely to see many tropical birds, reptiles, monkeys, alligators, and most impressive of all, spectacular panoramic views of the two volcanoes towering on both sides the river.

Located lakeside at Santo Domingo Beach, this laid-back and authentic Nicaraguan hacienda is a beautiful and welcoming base for your time in Ometepe. Day 8: Ometepe

Experience the highlights of Ometepe along with a local guide, learning about the nature and culture which have shaped this unique island. The tour starts with a visit to Finca Magdalena, a working community-run coffee plantation where you can meet some of the locals and see how they live and work. You’ll continue to the Charco Verde Nature Reserve and Chico Largo lagoon, a mystic place that has inspired local legends, before visiting a site where you can see artifacts from the island’s original, Pre-Columbian inhabitants. The tour finishes with a trip into the forest to see the spring at Ojo de Agua, where you can take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear water.

Day 9: Ometepe > Granada

You will say goodbye to Ometepe island and are transferred to the island’s port, where you receive assistance to board the ferry back to San Jorge. Upon your arrival, you are transferred to the colonial city of Granada.
Rest of the afternoon at leisure to explore a little bit on your own or join some optional tours.
Granada, or the “Gran Sultana”, is one of Latin Americas most beautiful cities, and is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Founded in 1524 on the shores of vast Lake Nicaragua, this ancient town is full of history and Spanish colonial charm, and is famed as one of the oldest European settlements in the western hemisphere. Amongst the narrow streets and glorious architecture, you’ll find some excellent hotels, fine restaurants and plenty of interesting sites and museums to fill your days. The city also makes a great base for exploring the surrounding area, with volcanos, beaches, national parks and the incredible water world of Las Isletas de Granada all within easy reach.

Day 10: Granada

In the morning, you enjoy a guided walk of Granada.
In the afternoon explore the picturesque Las Isletas archipelago from the water on this guided boat tour. Formed by a volcanic eruption over twenty thousand years ago, these for-est-covered islands are now home to fishing communities, luxury homes and resorts, and a wide variety of incredible wildlife. Your guide will point out the exotic flora and fauna as you glide across the clam waters, making stops along the way to visit one of the islands and a for-mer Spanish fortress. It’s a great way to experience this wonderful part of Nicaragua.

Day 11: Granada > Little Corn Island

During the middle morning, you are picked up from your hotel and transferred to Managua airport. From here, you take your domestic flight to Big Corn Island. Upon your arrival, the Yemaya team will pick you up from there, and take you to the island’s port so you can board the semi-private boat to Little Corn Island. Enjoy the Caribbean sea. Time at leisure.
Little Corn Island: This is the place to go, when you are looking for time to relax and spend in silence. The smaller one of the two Corn Islands located in the Atlantic, about 80 kilometres away from the coast, is a true paradise. White sand beaches with coconut trees and coral reefs are inviting you to stay a few days. The island can be reached within one hour by boat from Big Corn, but unlike the bigger island, there are no cars or motorbikes on this island. The island measures less than three square kilometres and has comfortable hotels and cozy restaurants. Swimming, diving and snorkelling are some of the activities you can do here.

Early this morning, you take your semi-private boat back to Big Corn Island and from there, you are transferred to the domestic airport in the island. Once there, you take your domestic flight back to Managua city. Upon your arrival to Managua airport, you take your departure flight back home.
