Galle Face

Discover the Capital

Opposite the Presidential Secretariat (old Parliament), is Galle Face. Here, every walk of life comes to relax and sit on the grass whilst watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean. Next to Galle Face is the grand Renaissance-style structure of Galle Face Hotel, South Asia’s leading Grande Dame, and the Galle Face Hotel is a testimony to both Sri Lanka’s colonial past and its independent present. You can enjoy the English high tea on the Victorian style veranda or sip a Martini facing the sea and enjoying the sunset.

The Galle Face area in Colombo is more than just a park and a historic hotel; it is the nexus of Colombo’s political, financial, and modern lifestyle districts, making it arguably the most central and dynamic area in the city.

Here is a breakdown of the area surrounding Galle Face Green:

1. The Financial and Commercial Hub (Colombo Fort)

Galle Face Green is immediately adjacent to the southern boundary of the historic Colombo Fort area (Colombo 01), which is the primary business district.

  • The Old Parliament Building: Located directly across the road from the Green, this grand colonial structure now houses the Presidential Secretariat, standing as a historical and administrative landmark.
  • Modern Skyscrapers: The area is defined by the juxtaposition of colonial buildings and gleaming new high-rises.
    • World Trade Center (WTC) Towers: The most prominent structures in the financial district, housing banks, corporate offices, and international firms.
    • The Colombo Lighthouse & Clock Tower: Historic navigational landmarks located within the Fort area, a short walk from the Green’s northern end.
  • The Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct: A beautifully restored 17th-century Dutch colonial structure that has been converted into a high-end complex of shops, trendy restaurants, and bars. It offers a sophisticated spot for dining and nightlife.

2. Luxury and Modern Development

The area is dominated by the most significant recent development in Colombo, transforming the city’s skyline.

  • One Galle Face Complex: This massive, integrated development is located directly opposite the Green, on the site of the former Ceylon Continental Hotel. It includes:
    • Shangri-La Colombo: A prominent five-star hotel.
    • One Galle Face Mall (OGF): The largest international-standard shopping mall in Sri Lanka, featuring over 200 tenants, including international luxury brands, a large food court, a modern multiplex cinema (PVR Cinemas), and dedicated entertainment zones.
    • The Residences and OGF Tower: Luxury apartments and Grade-A corporate office spaces.
  • The Port City (Colombo Port City): Located just to the north of Galle Face, this massive land reclamation project is creating a brand-new financial and lifestyle district envisioned as a special economic zone, further elevating the area’s importance as a global hub.

3. Cultural and Leisure Connections

From Galle Face, it is easy to connect to some of Colombo’s most important cultural and green spaces.

  • Beira Lake & Seema Malaka Temple: A short distance inland (near the Shangri-La), the serene Beira Lake is home to the stunning Seema Malaka temple, designed by Geoffrey Bawa, which appears to float on the water. The main Gangaramaya Temple is also nearby, known for its mix of traditional and modern architecture and its museum.
  • Slave Island (Kompannavidiya): The adjacent neighborhood is a historic area known for its multicultural character, street markets, and distinctive architecture, including some remaining Dutch and colonial-era barracks and unique local businesses.

In summary, the Galle Face area is the commercial, entertainment, and historical epicenter of modern Colombo. It perfectly encapsulates the city’s blend of ancient colonial heritage (Galle Face Hotel, Old Parliament), local street culture (the vendors on the Green), and the surge of high-end, contemporary development (One Galle Face, Port City).
