Remote Desert Island

Between Nosy Be and Nosy Komba there is a tiny dream islet called Nosy Vorona
(just 50 x 50 metres large) ideal for switching off the world and just doing nothing but simply enjoying peace, sunbathing, snorkelling or kayaking. On Nosy Vorona there is only a lighthouse and two welcoming guesthouses with several rooms and charming bungalows.

Nosy Vorona, or “Bird Island,” is a hidden gem in the Nosy Be archipelago of Madagascar, offering a unique blend of privacy, natural beauty, and luxury services.

Here are more specific details about this island:

A Private Island Experience

The island is primarily known for being a private retreat that can be rented exclusively for a single group, family, or couple. This setup allows visitors to enjoy a “Robinson Crusoe” experience with modern comforts.

  • Accommodation: The main lodging is 2 small guesthouses with charming bungalows, capable of accommodating a group (some listings suggest up to 9 or 12 guests).
  • Included Services: A key feature is the inclusion of a full staff, which often comprises a chef (providing full board: breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and housekeeping. An excursion desk and boat transport services are also usually available.
  • Isolation, but Accessible: It is situated off the southwest end of Nosy Be, between the larger islands of Nosy Be and Nosy Komba. The boat ride from Nosy Be is only about 15 to 20 minutes, meaning you get the feeling of total isolation while still being close to the main island’s amenities.

Activities and Attractions

The focus of a stay on Nosy Vorona is relaxation and water-based fun, leveraging its clear, surrounding waters.

  • On the Island: The main activities include relaxing in hammocks under palm trees, sunbathing on the white-sand beach, and simply enjoying the peace and sea breeze.
  • Water Activities: The island is an ideal base for sea excursions, including:
    • Snorkeling and Scuba Diving: Exploring the local coral reefs and abundant marine life.
    • Sports Fishing
    • Jet Ski Rides
    • Kayaking and Stand-up Paddleboarding
  • Neighboring Islands: Its convenient location makes it a great launching point for day trips to other popular spots in the area, such as:
    • Nosy Komba (Lemur Island): Famous for its black lemurs.
    • Nosy Tanikely: A protected Marine National Park known for exceptional underwater visibility and wildlife.

The Lighthouse

The island is a landmark for a working aid to navigation:

  • Lighthouse Tower: Nosy Vorona is distinguished by its operational lighthouse, known as the Nosy Vorona Light.
  • Specifications: It is typically described as a white octagonal tower. Records suggest a light station has existed there since as early as 1884, though the current structure’s date may be later. The former keeper’s cottage is sometimes part of the rental accommodation.
