Kitulgala is famous for being the filming location of the award-winning classic movie “Bridge on the River Kwai” directed by David Lean. The picturesque location of the movie by the river is accessible to all visitors. The river flowing through the village is exceptionably enjoyable. Though generally broad, at Kitulgala, Kelani River is shallow for the major part of its width and provides safe locations to swim and enjoy the waters and surroundings especially in the first four months of the year (not recommend for swimming from May – December. The other bank can be accessed from the village by wading out in the shallow waters and then by a traditional outrigger canoe. The name of Kitulgala is derived from the Kitul Palm tree (Sinhala: Sago Palm tree) that flourish in the village of Kitulgala. Kitul palm syrup is a necessary ingredient in the preparation of numerous traditional Sinhalese sweets. A variety of bananas along with other fruits and vegetable are grown in the village of Kitulgala. The restaurants and hotels in Kitulgala are famous for traditional Sinhalese rice and curry supplemented by the dessert of curd sweetened with Kitul palm honey.

Experience white water rafting in the Kelaniya River from 5 major rapids and 4 minor rapids with the rafting stretch approximately 6.5 kilometres in length and taking between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to complete, depending on water levels. This is for anyone over the age of 12 with safety gear, modern rafts, and a comprehensive safety briefing provided. Alternatively, you can choose the more relaxing flat water rafting.
