Earth Trip’s co-director Aleem Raheem was born in Sri Lanka and has lived in the UK since 1999, returning to the island several times a year. He has travelled Sri Lanka with his own children since they were babies, and personally inspects the hotels and experiences Earth Trip recommends rather than relying on third-party reports.

Visit the ancient citadel of Anuradhapura and the rock fortress of Sigiriya, timed for the quieter early morning where possible. The ruins of Polonnaruwa add further depth to the island’s ancient history.

The Hill Country

Stay among the tea estates around Nuwara Eliya, with cooler air and sweeping views after the humidity of the lowlands, a good change of pace for families and a scenic stretch for any route.

Wildlife and National Parks

See elephant herds at Minneriya National Park and track leopards at Yala National Park, with guides experienced in finding wildlife respectfully and without crowding the animals.
