Aleem’s Expert Note:

“For many of our travellers, this is the ‘dream’ combination, and for good reason. Sri Lanka provides the soul, the history, and the spice, while the Maldives provides a level of peace that is hard to find anywhere else on earth. My personal tip: take the time to enjoy a traditional rice and curry in the Sri Lankan hills before you head to the Maldives—the contrast between the rustic mountain flavours and the fresh seafood of the islands is one of the great culinary joys of this trip.”

With over 40 orphaned elephants, the park authorities maintain a watchful eye even after their release to ensure they adapt to their life in the wild. This region is one of Asia’s major archaeological centres, home to four UNESCO World Heritage sites with ruins and temples dating back to the 4th century B.C. The area is rich in culture, history, and wildlife, where ancient Kings developed sophisticated and advanced civilisations.

En route, you will visit Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital of Sri Lanka and a beautifully preserved UNESCO World Heritage site. Due to its concentrated history, its ruins are far more complete than those of earlier capitals. You will explore the ancient city and the Gal Vihara complex, where three gigantic Buddha statues are masterfully carved out of a single granite rock. Day 9: Sigiriya → Negombo

In the morning, you will visit Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a contender for the title of the eighth wonder of the world. This massive rock rising from the green scrub jungle is perhaps the most memorable landmark in Sri Lanka. From ancient times, the site served as a hermitage for Buddhist monks. The well-planned monastic complex includes cave temples, bathing pools, and the oldest surviving landscaped gardens in Asia.

Other highlights include the “Lion Stairway,” the “Mirror Wall,” and the intricate “Water Gardens.” The ruins of the capital, built by King Kassapa I (477–95), lie on the steep slopes and at the summit of this 370-metre granite peak, aptly known as ‘Lion’s Rock,’ which dominates the surrounding jungle.

Afterwards, enjoy an Ayurveda massage to rejuvenate. Ayurveda is the ancient health care system of South Asia, based entirely on herbs and diet. As one of the world’s oldest forms of healing, it is used to treat stress and various health conditions. Derived from the Sanskrit words for life (ayuh) and knowledge (veda), it is truly the ‘science of life,’ with origins dating back over 5,000 years.

Following your treatment, you will travel to the coastal town of Negombo.
