Black Rock Lodge

Black Rock Lodge is a premier, off-the-grid eco-resort spectacularly situated on the banks of the Macal River, overlooking the dramatic Black Rock Canyon in the Maya Mountains. This secluded 100-acre retreat is surrounded by the lush Don Elijio Panti National Park, offering a deep immersion into the Belizean rainforest. As an entirely self-sufficient sanctuary, the lodge is powered by its own micro-hydro and solar systems, providing a rare “disconnected” luxury. It is a world-renowned destination for travelers seeking a profound connection with nature, where the sounds of the river and the calls of the wild replace the noise of the modern world.

Rooms & Accommodation

The lodge offers 20 elegantly rustic cabins, each carefully positioned to capture refreshing mountain breezes and breathtaking views of the river or the towering canyon cliffs. Accommodations range from “Classic View” cabins to expansive “Riverfront Deluxe Suites” that feature wraparound patios and rooftop decks. Built with local hardwoods and stone, the rooms prioritize “fancy jungle-y” comfort with screened windows, high ceilings, and private hammocks. In keeping with its sustainable mission, the rooms forgo air conditioning and televisions, allowing guests to fall asleep to the natural symphony of howler monkeys and wake up to the sight of toucans in the canopy.

Dining

Dining at Black Rock Lodge is an intimate, communal experience that emphasizes a “farm-to-table” philosophy. The majority of ingredients are harvested directly from the on-site organic farm, including fresh eggs from the resident chickens and milk, yogurt, and cheese from their own goat herd. Breakfast and lunch are available à la carte, while dinner is a celebrated four-course set menu served “family-style,” fostering a sense of community among travelers. Every meal is complemented by homemade breads, jams, and fresh-squeezed juices from the property’s hundreds of fruit trees.

 Facilities

The social heart of the lodge is its open-air, thatch-roofed dining palapa, which serves as a stunning lookout point over the river. Guests can enjoy a freshwater swimming pool fed by mountain springs, which uses no harsh chemicals to protect the local birdlife. For wellness enthusiasts, the lodge features a treetop yoga shala and professional massage services. Additional amenities include a well-stocked bar serving tropical cocktails, a business center with Wi-Fi, and a network of well-maintained hiking trails that begin right on the property.

Activities

Black Rock Lodge is an adventurer’s playground with a specialized team of expert guides. On-site activities include river tubing through cascades, canoeing, and mountain biking along rugged jungle trails. The property is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with nearly 390 recorded species, including all three species of Belizean toucans. Guests can also participate in guided night hikes to see nocturnal wildlife, explore the ancient Mayan pottery inside Flour Camp Cave, or take a “Sustainability Tour” to see how the lodge operates off-grid. Its location also serves as an excellent base for day trips to the ATM Cave and the ruins of Xunantunich or Tikal.

Sustainability & Community

Sustainability is the guiding principle at Black Rock Lodge, which operates as a carbon-neutral entity. By utilizing 100% renewable energy from hydro and solar power and employing a sophisticated biological wastewater treatment system, the lodge ensures zero negative impact on the Macal River ecosystem. Beyond environmental efforts, the lodge is deeply rooted in the local community; it is staffed entirely by local Belizeans and hosts an annual “Bush Medicine Camp” for local children to preserve indigenous knowledge. By choosing Black Rock, guests directly support reforestation projects and community development in the Cayo District.
