Tikal National Park: Ancient Maya Temples in the Rainforest
Deep in the rainforests of northern Guatemala, Tikal National Park preserves the remains of one of the most important cities of the ancient Maya civilisation. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Tikal is known for its monumental limestone temples, ceremonial plazas and palaces, many of which rise above the surrounding forest canopy. The archaeological site sits within a wider natural landscape, where visitors can explore Maya history while listening for the calls of howler monkeys and looking out for tropical birds among the trees.
Experience Highlights
- The Great Plaza: Explore Tikal’s central ceremonial space, framed by the Temple of the Great Jaguar and Temple of the Masks, with ancient buildings that reveal the scale and importance of the city.
Temple IV: Admire one of Tikal’s tallest structures and, where access permits, enjoy far-reaching views across the rainforest canopy.
The Lost World Complex: Discover an important ceremonial and architectural area of the city, including structures associated with Maya astronomy and ritual.
Rainforest Wildlife: Keep an eye out for spider monkeys, howler monkeys, toucans and other birdlife while walking between the archaeological monuments.
Visiting Notes
Allow plenty of time: The site is extensive, with walking between different temple complexes and plazas.
What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes, water, sun protection and insect repellent are useful.
Best experience: A guided visit can help bring the city’s history and architecture to life.
