The Longest Beach on Mahé
Anse Royale is an administrative district of the Seychelles. This beach is the longest on Mahé and it provides beaches protected from choppy seas, providing a safe and comfortable swimming haven. This makes for very favourable conditions for swimming and beach fun from May to October.
Anse Royale refers to both a beautiful, long beach and the administrative district on the southeastern coast of Mahé, Seychelles.
It is a very popular destination known for its stunning natural beauty, safe swimming conditions, and a lively, authentic local village atmosphere.
Key Features of Anse Royale Beach
- Calm and Clear Waters: The bay is protected by an offshore coral reef, which acts as a natural breakwater. This makes the water particularly calm and shallow, perfect for swimming and is one of the safest beaches on Mahé for families and children.
- Snorkeling: The reef protection and clear water make it an excellent spot for snorkeling, with colorful marine life easily visible close to the shore. A very famous nearby snorkeling spot is the tiny Ile Souris (Souris Island), a short distance from Fairyland Beach (the northern tip of Anse Royale).
- Beach Appearance: The beach features soft white sand, fringed by lush palm and takamaka trees, and is punctuated by the signature granite boulders that the Seychelles are famous for.
- Amenities: The beach area is well-equipped with amenities, including nearby restaurants, take-away food shacks, local fish and fruit stalls, and even a parking lot.
The Anse Royale District
The village of Anse Royale is one of the main settlements in the south of Mahé and offers a more local, less purely resort-focused experience than some other areas.
- Local Facilities: The town contains numerous services, including a hospital, police station, banks, and the University of Seychelles.
- History and Culture: Anse Royale has a rich history; its French name literally means “Royal Bay.” It was the location where the Seychelles’ first spice gardens were established.
- Jardin du Roi Spice Garden: A short drive uphill from the beach, this historical garden is a popular attraction where visitors can explore endemic plants, spices, and a small museum, often ending with a meal at the plantation restaurant.
- Other Nearby Beaches: The long coastal stretch includes smaller, beautiful sections like Fairyland Beach (at the northern end), which is well-known for its picturesque setting.
