Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home: A Sanctuary for Freedom

The Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home (ETH), or Ath Athuru Sevana, is a world-renowned conservation facility dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and ultimate release of orphaned elephant calves. Located on the fringes of Udawalawe National Park, this sanctuary is widely recognized as one of the most ethical wildlife experiences in Asia. Unlike traditional orphanages, the ETH operates with a strictly hands-off approach, ensuring that these “gentle giants” retain their wild instincts so they can successfully transition back into the jungle.

Experience Highlights

  • The Ethical Feeding Sessions: The highlight of any visit is witnessing the “milk rush.” Four times a day, dozens of orphaned calves trot into the feeding area with flapping ears and swinging trunks to receive milk from dedicated caretakers. Visitors observe this heartwarming spectacle from a raised viewing platform, ensuring no direct human contact and keeping the elephants’ welfare at the forefront.

  • A “Found Family” in the Wild: The ETH focuses on social rehabilitation. Calves are raised in small groups, allowing them to form the vital social bonds they would naturally have in a herd. When they reach approximately five years of age, they are released back into the wild as a cohesive “found family” unit, often moving together into the vast grasslands of the neighboring National Park.

  • The Journey to Release: The facility is a masterclass in conservation science. Before release, calves are bathed in a mixture of dung to remove any human scent, reducing the chance of rejection by wild herds. Many released elephants are fitted with unobtrusive radio collars, allowing researchers to monitor their successful reintegration into the 30,000-hectare wilderness.

Key Wildlife to Spot

  • The Orphans: At any given time, the ETH is home to 20–40 elephant calves ranging from tiny infants to five-year-old juveniles preparing for their return to the wild.

  • Released Juveniles: From the viewing platform, keep an eye on the surrounding scrubland; you can often spot previously released juveniles lingering near the boundaries of the home before they fully venture into the deep park.

  • Birdlife: The surrounding dry-zone scrub is active with Sri Lanka Junglefowl, Crested Serpent Eagles, and various colorful kingfishers that frequent the nearby reservoir.

Visiting Hours & Best Time to Visit

The center is open to the public daily during the scheduled milk feeding sessions. Each session lasts about 20–30 minutes:

  • Feeding Times: 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM (Noon), 3:00 PM, and 6:00 PM.

  • Peak Season: While the ETH is a fantastic year-round destination, visiting during the Dry Season (May to September) allows you to combine your visit with a jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park, where large wild herds gather around the reservoir.

The Earth Trip Experience

At Earth Trip, we advocate for responsible and ethical tourism. Aleem, who personally inspects our partners in Udawalawe every year, recommends visiting the ETH as a powerful alternative to commercial elephant attractions.

We typically combine a 3:00 PM feeding session with a late-afternoon private jeep safari into Udawalawe National Park, providing a complete “circle of life” experience—from the rehabilitation of orphans to seeing majestic wild tuskers in their natural habitat. Our expert guides are on hand to explain the complex social dynamics of these animals and the vital work being done to mitigate human-elephant conflict in the region.

Other Popular Experiences in the South

  • Yala National Park: A rugged wilderness famous for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world.

  • Galle Fort: A UNESCO World Heritage site blending colonial Dutch architecture with vibrant Sri Lankan culture.
