Haputale: The Gateway to the Southern Highlands
Perched on the southern edge of the Hill Country, Haputale is a town that literally sits among the clouds. At an elevation of roughly 1,431 metres, it offers some of the most dramatic landscapes in Sri Lanka. On a clear day, the “Haputale Gap” provides a staggering view that stretches all the way across the southern plains to the shimmering line of the Indian Ocean. It is a land of emerald tea estates, mist-shrouded peaks, and a refreshing climate that provides a welcome contrast to the coastal heat.
Experience Highlights
Lipton’s Seat & Dambatenne:
Follow in the footsteps of the tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton. A winding journey through the Dambatenne Tea Estate leads to Lipton’s Seat, a lookout point said to be where he surveyed his burgeoning empire. The panoramic views here are arguably the finest in the highlands. A visit to the Dambatenne Tea Factory—one of the longest in the country—offers a fascinating look at the traditional “orthodox” method of tea production.
Adisham Bungalow:
This grand Benedictine monastery was originally a country house built by an English aristocrat in 1931. With its Tudor-style architecture, beautiful orchards, and well-preserved library, it feels like a slice of the British countryside transported to the tropics. The monks here still produce famous jams and fruit cordials which are a must-buy for any visitor.
The Scenic Rail Journey:
Haputale is a key stop on the iconic Main Line railway. The stretch between Haputale and Ella is often cited as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, passing over deep ravines and through dense pine forests.
Expert Note: A Message from Aleem
“Haputale is my personal favourite alternative to the busier town of Ella. It has retained an authentic, rugged charm that is harder to find elsewhere. Having lived in the UK for over 25 years, I know how much our guests value peace and high-quality walking trails.
I’ve noticed a wonderful recent shift in the area; several boutique tea bungalows have recently completed refurbishments as of early 2026, offering even higher standards of luxury and private service. I personally vet these properties to ensure they meet the European standards of comfort our clients expect. I always recommend an early start for Lipton’s Seat—arriving by 7:00 AM is essential to beat the mist that often rolls in by mid-morning. Because I understand the logistical nuances of the highlands, I ensure your private driver knows exactly where the best ‘hidden’ viewpoints are located, away from the standard tourist stops.”

The Earth Trip Experience
At Earth Trip, we specialise in the “Slow Travel” movement within the highlands. We don’t just drive you through Haputale; we ensure you have the time to walk through the tea bushes and interact with the local community. The area has recently seen improvements in road connectivity from the south, making it easier than ever to combine a mountain retreat with a safari in Yala or Udawalawe.
Your Highland adventure is 100% protected through our Travel Trust Association (TTA) membership. We provide private, high-torque vehicles suited for the winding mountain roads and local guides who possess deep knowledge of the flora, fauna, and colonial history of the region.
Visiting Tips
-
The Weather: The highlands can be surprisingly chilly in the evenings. We recommend packing a light fleece or jacket, even if you are visiting during the warmest months.
-
Leech Protection: If you plan on hiking through the tea estates after rain, we provide our guests with “leech socks” and natural repellent to ensure a comfortable trek.
-
Train Tickets: Demand for the scenic train remains high. We manage all bookings well in advance to ensure you secure a seat in the observation or first-class carriages.
