Horton Plains National Park

The Finest View in Sri Lanka

Discover the Horton Plains National Park, Sri Lanka’s highest and most isolated plateau with an elevation of 2,134 metres. The scenery that can be seen from here is considered to be the finest view in Sri Lanka. Here you can follow bridle paths for about 4 hours through mystic cloud forests and Patna grassland to the “World’s End” a sheer drop of 1050 metres. Lie on your stomach and peep over the ridge, the view when it is clear of mist is simply magnificent. Horton Plains National Park is home to rare flora and fauna; Sambar deer and elusive Bear monkey as well as many birds. Early morning, the Indian Ocean rims the horizon, 80 kilometres away. The name Horton Plains, was out of respect for the then British Governor of Sri Lanka, Sir Horton and the area was discovered by Sir Thomas Farr in the 1900s. This is one of world’s best nature tracks and nature lovers will enjoy this wide, patna-grass-covered plain and the Baker Falls.

Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its unique montane grasslands and cloud forests. It is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers, offering a stark contrast to the tropical lowlands of the island.

Here are the key features and essential information about the park:

1. Key Attractions and the Main Hike

The main experience at Horton Plains is a circular trekking route that connects the park’s three most famous attractions:

Attraction Description
World’s End A sheer cliff face and the main highlight of the park, plunging dramatically between 870 to 1,200 meters into the valley below. On a clear day, the views stretch all the way to the southern coast.
Mini World’s End A smaller, less severe precipice located a short distance before the main World’s End, offering a stunning precursor to the main viewpoint.
Baker’s Falls A beautiful, cascading waterfall named after the British explorer, Sir Samuel Baker. It requires a slight detour and a descent from the main path.
The Circuit Trail The entire loop is approximately 9.5 km (6 miles) long and takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete at a leisurely pace. It is generally considered an easy to moderate walk.

2. Best Time to Visit (The Golden Rule)

The most crucial factor for a good visit is the time of day, as mist and clouds can quickly obscure the views:

  • Start Early: Visitors must aim to be at the World’s End viewpoint before 9:00 AM.
  • Park Hours: The park generally opens around 6:00 AM. Most visitors staying in the nearby towns of Nuwara Eliya or Haputale leave very early to reach the gate for opening time.

3. Ecology and Wildlife

Horton Plains is a crucial ecosystem and watershed for Sri Lanka’s major rivers (including the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe).

  • Habitat: The park consists of montane grasslands (patana) interspersed with cloud forest. It is one of the most significant areas of remaining cloud forest in the country.
  • Wildlife:
    • The most commonly sighted large mammal is the Sri Lankan Sambar Deer, often seen grazing peacefully on the open plains.
    • The park is also home to endemic species like the purple-faced langur and is a designated Important Bird Area (IBA), hosting highland endemics such as the Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush.
    • The elusive Sri Lankan leopard is present but rarely seen.

4. Practical Tips for Visitors

  • No Plastic Zone: Horton Plains has a strict environmental policy. Park officials will check your bags at the entrance and confiscate all single-use plastics, including plastic wrappers. Use reusable water bottles and paper bags for snacks.
  • Clothing: The high altitude (over meters) means it can be very cold, especially before sunrise. Dress in layers and wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes (avoiding sandals due to potentially muddy or slippery paths).
  • Getting There: There is no public transport to the park entrance. Visitors must arrange private transport (taxi, car, or tuk-tuk) from nearby towns like Nuwara Eliya (about a 1.5-hour drive) or Haputale.
