Pigeon Island Marine National Park: Sri Lanka’s Underwater Eden

Located just a few hundred metres off the coast of Nilaveli in Trincomalee, Pigeon Island Marine National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic marine sanctuaries. Comprising two islands—Large Pigeon Island and Small Pigeon Island—this park is famous for its powder-white coral beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters. It is home to some of the best-preserved coral reefs in the country, making it a premier destination for snorkellers and scuba divers looking to witness the vibrant biodiversity of the Indian Ocean in a shallow, accessible environment.

Experience Highlights

  • World-Class Snorkelling: The main attraction is the large fringing coral reef on the western side of the island. With depths ranging from just 1 to 4 metres, even beginners can easily glide over intricate “cabbage” corals and staghorn formations while surrounded by clouds of tropical fish.

  • Swimming with Blacktip Reef Sharks: One of the park’s most thrilling features is the resident population of juvenile Blacktip Reef Sharks. These sleek, harmless predators are often seen patrolling the shallow reef edges—a heart-pounding but safe encounter for snorkellers.

  • Sea Turtle Encounters: The calm, nutrient-rich waters around the island are a frequent feeding ground for Green Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles. Watching these ancient mariners graze peacefully on seagrass is a highlight of any trip to the park.

  • Breathtaking Island Scenery: Beyond the water, the islands themselves are beautiful. Large Pigeon Island features a rocky outcrop that provides a stunning viewpoint of the surrounding reef system and the distant coastline of mainland Sri Lanka.

Expert Note: A Message from Aleem

“Pigeon Island is a fragile paradise, and its beauty depends entirely on our respect for it. Having lived in the UK for over 25 years, I understand the importance of combining adventure with strict environmental ethics.

I personally vet our boat operators and snorkelling guides every year to ensure they adhere to ‘no-touch’ policies and avoid anchoring on the coral. In 2026, the park authorities have introduced stricter visitor caps to preserve the reef, and I ensure our guests have their permits secured well in advance. At Earth Trip, we arrange for our guests to arrive early in the morning—not only to catch the calmest waters and best visibility but to enjoy the island before the midday crowds arrive.”

Earth Trip Favourite Fun Facts

  • The Name Origin: The island gets its name from the Rock Pigeons that have used the rocky crevices of the island as their primary breeding ground for centuries.

  • A Coral Nursery: Pigeon Island contains over 100 species of corals and nearly 300 species of reef fish. It’s essentially a “living library” of Indian Ocean marine life.

  • Volcanic Beginnings: Geologically, the islands are part of a rare rocky formation that differs significantly from the sandy mainland, creating the perfect hard substrate for coral to flourish.

  • Invisible Borders: Small Pigeon Island is actually surrounded by a series of rocky islets that serve as a natural barrier, protecting the delicate inner reef from heavy ocean swells.

The Earth Trip Experience

At Earth Trip, we ensure your marine adventure is seamless and responsible. Aleem and our team provide high-quality snorkelling gear and experienced guides who act as underwater spotters to help you find the sharks and turtles.

Your journey is 100% protected through our Travel Trust Association (TTA) membership and comprehensive insurance. Our private transport network and dedicated fuel allocations ensure that even with local logistical shifts in 2026, your travel to Nilaveli and your boat transfer to the island remain entirely uninterrupted. We provide the security of a UK-based operator with the specialized knowledge of the East Coast.

Visiting Hours & Best Time to Visit

  • Ideal Timing: We highly recommend a 7:30 AM departure from the mainland. The sea is flattest in the morning, visibility is at its peak, and the heat is manageable.

  • Environmental Note: Please use “reef-safe” sunscreen to protect the delicate coral ecosystem.

  • Best Season: The East Coast season runs from May to September. During these months, the waters are exceptionally clear and calm, perfect for underwater photography.
