The Pekoe Trail

The Pekoe Trail is a 300-kilometre, 22-stage trekking route that winds through the central highlands, connecting historic tea estates and diverse mountain ecosystems to offer a comprehensive exploration of the region’s colonial heritage and natural beauty.

The Pekoe Trail is a premier 300-kilometre long-distance walking path that traverses the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Named after ‘Orange Pekoe’—the highest grade of Western tea—it is the first curated trail of its kind in the country, designed to showcase the heritage, topography, and community of the tea-growing regions.

The Route and Structure

The trail is systematically divided into 22 distinct stages, each typically ranging from 10 to 15 kilometres. This modular design allows hikers to complete the journey in its entirety over several weeks or to select specific sections based on difficulty and scenery.

  • Connectivity: The trail creates a geographical loop, beginning near Hanthana (near Kandy) and snaking through the mountains to reach Nuwara Eliya, Haputale, and Ella, before concluding in the southern reaches of the highlands.

  • Terrain: Hikers navigate a variety of surfaces, including narrow estate paths, rugged mountain ridges, old colonial tracks, and gravel roads used by tea pluckers for over a century.

A Heritage Journey

The Pekoe Trail is fundamentally an exploration of the island’s tea industry. The path was created by connecting the network of footpaths established during the British colonial era.

  • Tea Plantations: The trail provides intimate access to world-renowned estates, allowing hikers to witness the daily rhythm of tea cultivation and processing.

  • Colonial Infrastructure: Along the route, walkers encounter historic bungalows, old stone bridges, and the distinctive ‘lineroom’ villages where the plantation communities have lived for generations.

Ecological Diversity

As the elevation fluctuates between 600 and 2,000 metres, the trail offers a diverse range of ecological zones:

  • Cloud Forests & Grasslands: High-altitude sections pass through mist-shrouded montane forests and open patana grasslands.

  • Flora and Fauna: The trail is a sanctuary for biodiversity. Walkers may spot endemic bird species, giant squirrels, and, in more remote sections, signs of the elusive Sri Lankan leopard.

  • Hydrology: The route is punctuated by mountain streams, natural springs, and impressive waterfalls that feed the island’s major river systems.

Sustainability and Community

The development of the Pekoe Trail focuses on sustainable tourism. By guiding hikers through remote villages and lesser-visited regions, it provides economic opportunities for local communities through small-scale homestays, local guiding, and tea-shop hospitality.

It is designed to be a low-impact way to experience the highlands, promoting the preservation of the natural landscape while celebrating the cultural identity of the hill country people.
