Trincomalee, is a port city and has the fifth largest natural harbour in the world. The city is surrounded by lagoons, bays and hills and situated in a peninsula. The white powder golden sandy beaches spread across the area offering you calm azure waters to immerse yourself in the water. This is a perfect place for snorkelling, scuba diving and surfing. This port city has a history worth exploring, the strategic location of the natural harbour made it a city worthwhile conquering, and hence it was conquered by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British. Trincomalee is fondly referred to as “Trinco” by the locals, the anglicized Tamil word ‘Trincomalee’ denotes the meaning “Lord of the sacred hill”.

The Beaches: Sun, Sand, and Sea
Trinco is famous for its gorgeous coastline. The water is clear and the sand is golden, making it a perfect tropical escape!
- Uppuveli Beach: This is your go-to hub! It’s a low-key, relaxed village area just a few kilometers north of Trinco town, with plenty of guesthouses and a great atmosphere. It’s the perfect base for your trip. You can even grab a sunset drink at a spot like Fernando’s Bar right on the beach.
- Nilaveli Beach: Head a little further north for this slice of paradise. It’s a quieter, more deserted stretch of white sand where you can truly unwind and escape the crowds.
- Marble Beach: Located about 12 kilometers south of town, this beach is a pristine, tranquil bay known for its super clear water—it’s often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the area.

Trinco offers much more than just relaxing on the sand. Get ready to explore!
1. Snorkel or Dive at Pigeon Island National Park
- What it is: A small island just offshore from Nilaveli, this National Park is an absolute must-see for its coral reefs and marine life.
- Why you should go: It’s a fantastic spot for snorkeling or diving where you can swim among colorful fish and maybe even spot a harmless shark! You’ll need a short boat ride to get there.
2. Go Whale & Dolphin Watching
- When to go: Trincomalee is one of the best places in the world to see the majestic Blue Whale! The peak season is generally March to August, with some sources saying May to October offers the highest chance of sightings. Tours usually leave early in the morning.
- What you might see: Keep your eyes peeled for Blue Whales and Sperm Whales, plus pods of playful Spinner Dolphins. You can also sometimes spot whales right from shore at Swami Rock!
3. Explore the Historic Fort Frederick & Koneswaram Temple
- Fort Frederick: This old fort, originally built by the Portuguese, is now a Sri Lankan military base, but it’s open to visitors. The grounds are covered in greenery and you’ll often see spotted deer roaming freely!
- Koneswaram Temple: Perched dramatically atop Swami Rock within the fort, this ancient Hindu temple is a spectacular sight. The views from the cliff’s edge overlooking Trincomalee Bay and the deep-water harbor are absolutely breathtaking—it’s a perfect photo opportunity!
4. Get Lost in Color at Sri Pathrakali Amman Kovil
- This vibrant Hindu temple is dedicated to the goddess Bhadrakhali. It’s an incredible stop right opposite the bus station, full of colorful statues, garlands, and the aroma of incense. It’s a real treat for your cultural senses.
5. Dive into History at the Maritime Museum
- Located in a lovely 18th-century colonial building, this museum is a treasure trove of naval history and a great place to learn about the local flora and fauna, including what you can find around Pigeon Island.
Best Time to Visit
The best weather for visiting Trincomalee and enjoying the east coast is during the dry season, which runs from May to September (or generally January to September). This is when the seas are calm and perfect for beach time and whale watching! You can expect more rain from October to December.
