The Junsheng Sand Art Gallery, Zhangjiajie

This lovely art gallery was opened by Hunanese artist Li Junsheng in 2001 to showcase a technique of painting he himself invented. Junsheng took the classical style of Chinese landscape art and turned it textural, using coloured sand and stone. Rendered in natural rock, and plant material, his paintings and those of his followers combine traditional Chinese with the brilliant hues of Western watercolour and three-dimensional bas relief sculpture. Li Junsheng spent more than twenty years researching and perfecting his style and technique before revealing it to the public.
