Fireworks were invented in Liyuang in the Second Century BC and the city has preserved a tradition of firework making to this day. It’s showcased every weekend in a jaw-dropping performance taking place in an open-air theatre next to the river. It’s a mix of stage show – with singers, bands, dancers and fire jugglers, and firework tournament, where the pyrotechnic skills of local craftsmen are challenged by those from a guest province or city. For over two hours the skies above Liuyang filled with bursting rockets and cascades of light in one of the greatest displays of pyrotechnics anywhere in the world.
