Antananarivo

Antananarivo, affectionately known as ‘Tana,’ is the vibrant, rhythmic heart of Madagascar. Perched high in the Central Highlands at 1,500 metres, the capital is a striking mosaic of terracotta-tiled roofs, pastel-coloured colonial villas, and emerald-green rice paddies. Founded in the 17th century as the seat of the Merina Kingdom, Tana is the essential starting point for any Madagascar holiday, offering an evocative blend of pre-colonial history and highland charm.

Antananarivo Highlights

The Upper Town (La Haute Ville) The most historic and picturesque district, the Upper Town is a labyrinth of steep, winding streets and cobbled paths. From this vantage point, you can look out over the entire capital and the surrounding plains. It is the cultural soul of the city, housing significant landmarks like the historic Queen’s Palace (Rova) and the former Prime Minister’s Palace.

The Rova of Antananarivo Dominating the city’s highest hill, this royal palace complex was the spiritual centre of the Imerina Kingdom. Although much of it was damaged by fire in 1995, the site has been meticulously restored. It remains a powerful symbol of Malagasy identity and offers the best panoramic views for a sunset sundowner in Tana.

Artisanal Markets & Culture For those seeking authentic Malagasy crafts, Tana is the island’s premier hub. Markets like La Digue feature an incredible array of hand-woven raffia goods, intricate Zafimaniry wood carvings, and world-renowned spices such as organic vanilla and wild bourbon pepper.

Lake Anosy This heart-shaped lake in the city centre is famous for its jacaranda trees, which bloom in a sea of violet during October. At its centre stands a monument dedicated to the fallen of World War I, and the lake is a popular spot for observing the city’s daily rhythms and highland birdlife.

Climate & Best Time to Visit

Antananarivo enjoys a temperate highland climate and can be visited year-round. However, the best time to visit is during the dry season from April to November, when the air is crisp and the skies are clear. October is a favorite for photographers, as the blooming jacaranda trees paint the urban landscape in shades of purple.
