Nature Lodge, Amber Mountain National Park

A Mountainous Oasis of Cool Air and Cloud Forests

Nature Lodge is an intimate eco-hotel situated at the gateway to Amber Mountain National Park (Montagne d’Ambre). Located at an altitude of approximately 700 meters, the lodge offers a refreshing microclimate that stands in stark contrast to the tropical heat of the northern plains. Surrounded by lush, verdant gardens and overlooking the Mozambique Channel and the Bay of Diego Suarez in the distance, it is the premier choice for travelers looking to explore Madagascar’s first national park.

Rooms & Accommodation

The lodge features 12 spacious, independent chalets built using local natural materials like rosewood and traditional thatch.

  • Architectural Harmony: The chalets are scattered across a hillside to ensure privacy. They are constructed on stilts with large stone-and-wood foundations that blend seamlessly into the forest edge.

  • Large Panoramic Balconies: Every chalet features a large private terrace equipped with comfortable seating, offering breathtaking views of the sunset over the “Sugarloaf” and the Mozambique Channel.

  • Comfortable Interiors: Rooms are bright and airy, featuring large double or twin beds with high-quality linens, a small lounge area, and an en-suite bathroom with hot water (vital for the cooler mountain evenings).

  • Family Friendly: Several chalets are designed to accommodate families, with extra space and beds available upon request.

Dining & Atmosphere

The central lodge building is a grand, open-plan structure that serves as the heart of the property.

  • The “Lighthouse” Restaurant: Known for its warm atmosphere, the restaurant serves a refined menu of Malagasy and French fusion. Because of the altitude, the lodge produces much of its own organic fruit and vegetables in the surrounding gardens.

  • Panoramic Bar: The bar and lounge area feature deep armchairs and a wide-screen view of the valley below. It is the perfect spot for a local rhum arrangé after a day of trekking.

  • Cooler Evenings: As temperatures can drop significantly at night, the lodge provides a cozy atmosphere that is a welcome change from the coastal humidity.

Facilities & Experience

Nature Lodge is designed for the active nature lover, serving as a launchpad for exploring the biodiversity of the cloud forest.

  • Direct Park Access: The lodge is located just a few minutes from the entrance of Amber Mountain National Park, allowing you to be among the first on the trails in the morning.

  • Expert Guiding: We coordinate with local specialists to lead you through the park to find the Brookesia micra (one of the world’s smallest chameleons), crowned lemurs, and the park’s famous waterfalls.

  • Nature Trails: Even without leaving the property, guests can walk through the lodge’s extensive gardens, which are a haven for chameleons, geckos, and a variety of endemic birds.

  • Strategic Location: Beyond the park, the lodge is a great base for visiting the Red Tsingy or the city of Antsiranana.

Sustainability & Community

The lodge operates with a deep commitment to environmental preservation and the local community of Joffreville.

  • Eco-Construction: By using traditional building techniques and local labor, the lodge minimizes its physical impact on the surrounding forest.

  • Water & Energy Management: The lodge uses gravity-fed water from mountain springs and implements energy-saving practices to reduce its footprint.

  • Local Support: Nature Lodge is a significant employer in the village of Joffreville, supporting local families and contributing to the maintenance of the access roads to the park.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do we reach the lodge? Your private Earth Trip driver will manage the transfer from Diego Suarez (TLE) or the airport. The drive takes about 45 minutes to an hour, climbing through the historic village of Joffreville. We provide a 4×4 vehicle to ensure a smooth ascent up the mountain.

What is the weather like? It is significantly cooler than the coast. Daytime temperatures are pleasant for hiking, but evenings can be chilly. We recommend bringing a light fleece or sweater and a waterproof jacket, as rain is common in the cloud forest.

Are there lemurs at the lodge? Yes! Sanford’s brown lemurs and crowned lemurs are frequent visitors to the trees around the chalets. You might also hear the haunting calls of the Madagascan fish eagle from the nearby valleys.
