Famata Lodge

Discover Tulear

Famata Lodge is situated in the south west of Madagascar around the nature reserve of Tsinjoriake. The lodge has a homely feel and is directly on the beach, in the midst of a diverse vegetation.

The lodge uses sustainable materials from the region for their range of comfortable bungalows. Choose from sleeping in fresh air under a mosquito net, above the treetops with a fantastic view of the sea, or in a spacious room with sliding windows. The houses are nestled in the midst of the botanical garden with euphorbias and other endemic plants. They are equipped with a private bathroom with warm water and mosquito nets.
The chefs at Famata Lodge will entice you with specialities from Switzerland and Madagascar. Each dish uses fresh, local produce and bears the hallmark of hostess Julia. Enjoy your meal with a beautiful panoramic view of the sea. Bon appetit!
The Famata Lodge team will show you the most beautiful places around the nature reserve of Tsinjoriake on land or sea. You can sail with the trimaran towards the sun, wander through palm groves to a bathing spring or visit the surrounding villages and vegetation.

Nature and comfort are in perfect harmony at Famata Lodge. Julia and Peter Schachenmann-Razafimanga look forward to welcoming you at their Malagasy-Swiss eco lodge.

Famata Lodge details:

Perched on the edge of the Mozambique Channel just south of Tulear, Famata Lodge is a boutique eco-retreat where the surreal beauty of the spiny forest meets the deep blue of the Indian Ocean.

Located in the coastal village of Sarodrano, this lodge is a sanctuary for those looking to escape the hustle of the city and immerse themselves in the unique ecology of Southwest Madagascar. It is set within a private reserve that protects the rare, endemic flora of the region, offering a serene “barefoot luxury” experience. Here, the landscape is dominated by baobabs and octopus trees, providing a striking backdrop to one of the most beautiful coastlines in the country.

The Property

The lodge is an intimate collection of structures built using traditional materials such as stone, wood, and thatched roofs, designed to blend harmoniously with the arid environment. The heart of the property is the open-air restaurant and lounge, which offers panoramic views of the turquoise lagoon and the Great Reef of Tulear. A small, inviting swimming pool provides a refreshing break from the southern sun, while the surrounding botanical garden serves as a living museum of Madagascar’s extraordinary xerophytic plants.

The Bungalows

Famata Lodge features a handful of exclusive bungalows, each strategically positioned to capture the sea breeze and provide total privacy:

  • Organic Design: The rooms are spacious and airy, featuring polished stone floors, high ceilings, and handcrafted furniture that reflects the local Malagasy aesthetic.

  • Open to Nature: Large windows and private terraces allow guests to wake up to views of the ocean or the sculptural shapes of the spiny forest.

  • Eco-Friendly Comfort: The lodge operates with a strong commitment to sustainability, utilizing solar energy and natural ventilation to ensure a comfortable stay with a minimal environmental footprint.

Experiences

The location of Famata Lodge offers a diverse range of activities, from marine exploration to botanical discovery.

  • Spiny Forest Walks: Explore the lodge’s private reserve to see baobabs, pachypodiums, and a variety of endemic birds and lizards.

  • Marine Safaris: Take a boat trip to the nearby Saint Augustin Bay or the Great Reef for world-class snorkeling and diving.

  • Sarodrano Peninsula: Visit the nearby sacred caves and the local Vezo fishing village to experience the traditional seafaring culture of the South.

  • Kitesurfing & Windsurfing: The constant trade winds and flat lagoon waters make this a premier destination for wind sports enthusiasts.

  • Sunset over the Lagoon: Relax on the terrace with a view of the traditional outrigger canoes (pirogues) gliding across the water as the sun dips below the horizon.

Earth Trip Opinion: Famata Lodge is a hidden gem for travelers who appreciate quiet, architectural beauty and ecological integrity. It offers a much more intimate and thoughtful experience than the larger resorts in nearby Ifaty. It’s the perfect place to decompress, wander through a “forest of thorns,” and enjoy the raw, untouched beauty of the Malagasy coast.
