Where to Stay in Cambodia: Hand-Picked Hotels and Lodges
Cambodia has some of the most memorable places to stay in South-East Asia: a 1960s royal guesthouse a few minutes from Angkor Wat, wooden villas among rice fields, a grand 1920s hotel in Phnom Penh, tented camps deep in the Cardamom rainforest and a private island in the Gulf of Thailand.
Every hotel on this page has been chosen by our Cambodia specialist Alex Robinson, a travel journalist who travelled across Cambodia with Earth Trip for The Independent and has stayed in several of them himself. Any of them can be combined into a tailor-made Cambodia holiday.
How We Choose Our Cambodia Hotels
- Character and location: heritage buildings, riverside settings and hotels close to the temples or the old town, so you lose less time in traffic.
- Comfort where it matters: air conditioning, good beds and a pool to cool off in after a morning at the temples.
- Good for Cambodia: hotels that train and employ local people, support community projects and cut out single-use plastic.
- Small and personal: most of our hotels have fewer than 50 rooms, so the service is personal and the atmosphere calm.
Our Cambodia Hotels by Region
1. Siem Reap and Angkor
Siem Reap is the base for exploring the temples of Angkor. Stay close to the river and the old town for restaurants and markets, or on the edge of town for peace and rice-field views.
- Jaya House River Park, Siem Reap: a boutique hotel in leafy gardens by the Siem Reap river, and one of the first hotels in Cambodia to go plastic-free. Alex stayed here and liked that it employs many people from the villages around Siem Reap.
- The Aviary Hotel, Siem Reap: a colourful, bird-themed hotel a short walk from the town centre, with a rooftop pool and bar, a second pool and connecting rooms for families.
- Amansara, Siem Reap: a 1960s villa built as a royal guesthouse, now an intimate hotel with suites, some with their own pool, and private visits to the temples.
- Shinta Mani Angkor & Bensley Collection Pool Villas, Siem Reap: a stylish hotel in the French Quarter, with private pool villas designed by Bill Bensley. Its foundation supports local families with healthcare, education and small business grants.
- Zannier Phum Baitang, Siem Reap: wooden villas on stilts among rice paddies on the edge of town, with a long infinity pool and a village feel.
2. Phnom Penh
- Raffles Hotel Le Royal, Phnom Penh: the capital’s grand colonial hotel, open since 1929, with gardens, two pools and the famous Elephant Bar.
- Rosewood Phnom Penh: a modern hotel on the top floors of the Vattanac Capital tower, with sweeping views over the Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers. Alex stayed here on his trip.
3. The Cardamom Mountains
The Cardamoms are Cambodia’s great rainforest wilderness. Both camps here help to protect it.
- Cardamom Tented Camp, Botum Sakor: a riverside eco-camp on the Prek Tachan river, next to Botum Sakor National Park, on land its owners bought to protect it from development. Kayak the river, walk with local guides and listen for gibbons at dawn. Alex stayed here and woke to wild gibbons outside his tent.
- Shinta Mani Wild, Cardamom Mountains: a luxury tented camp designed by Bill Bensley, set along a river and waterfalls in a wildlife corridor between three national parks. You can arrive by zipline, and the camp funds ranger patrols that protect the forest.
4. The Islands
- Song Saa Private Island, Koh Rong archipelago: villas on two small islands linked by a footbridge, surrounded by a marine reserve. One of the most special places to end a trip to Cambodia.

Responsible Stays
Tourism money can do a lot of good in Cambodia. We favour hotels that train and employ local people, support schools, healthcare and small businesses, refill water bottles instead of selling plastic ones, and help protect forests and wildlife, like Cardamom Tented Camp and Shinta Mani Wild. Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I stay in Siem Reap to visit Angkor?
Most of our clients stay in or near Siem Reap town, which is about 15 to 20 minutes’ drive from Angkor Wat. Hotels near the river and the old town, like Jaya House River Park and The Aviary, are close to restaurants and markets. For peace and quiet, Zannier Phum Baitang and Amansara are on the edge of town, closer to the temples.
Do hotels in Cambodia have air conditioning and wifi?
Yes. All our hotels in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and on the islands have air conditioning and wifi. At the tented camps in the Cardamom Mountains, wifi may be limited to the main lodge, and some tents are cooled by fans and the forest shade.
Which Cambodia hotels are the most sustainable?
Jaya House River Park was one of the first plastic-free hotels in Cambodia and employs many local people. Shinta Mani Angkor’s foundation supports local families, and Cardamom Tented Camp and Shinta Mani Wild both help protect the Cardamom rainforest. We are happy to build a whole trip around hotels like these.
Which Cambodia hotels are best for families?
The Aviary Hotel has connecting rooms and two pools, including one on the roof, and Jaya House River Park has large gardens and a pool close to town. Older children love the kayaking and wildlife at Cardamom Tented Camp. Let us know your children’s ages and we will suggest rooms and activities to suit.
Which Cambodia hotels are best for a honeymoon?
Amansara and the Bensley pool villas at Shinta Mani Angkor are romantic bases for Angkor, and Shinta Mani Wild is an unforgettable adventure. Many couples end their trip at Song Saa Private Island, with overwater villas in the Koh Rong archipelago.
How far ahead should I book my Cambodia hotels?
For the cool, dry season from November to February, and especially Christmas and New Year, we recommend booking six to nine months ahead, as the smaller hotels and the tented camps fill quickly. From May to October there is usually more availability.
