Welcome To Costa Rica
Signature Landscapes
- The Cloud Forests of Monteverde
The Icon: A mystical, high-altitude realm where moisture-rich clouds drape over ancient ferns and primary forests, home to the elusive Resplendent Quetzal.
The Earth Trip Distinction: We look beyond the standard canopy tours. We curate private, early-morning walks with specialist ornithologists who understand the quietest paths, ensuring your encounter with the forest’s rare birdlife is intimate and undisturbed.
- Arenal: Volcanic Majesty & Hot Springs
The Icon: The perfectly symmetrical cone of the Arenal Volcano, surrounded by rich secondary forests and naturally heated thermal rivers.
The Earth Trip Distinction: We skip the crowded commercial hot spring resorts. Our itineraries feature hand-vetted boutique retreats that offer private thermal pools and unobstructed volcanic views, allowing you to appreciate the landscape in total serenity.
- Tortuguero & the Osa Peninsula: The Wild Frontiers
The Icon: Tortuguero’s labyrinthine water canals on the Caribbean side and the raw, untamed beauty of Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula.
The Earth Trip Distinction: These remote regions require masterfully planned logistics. We utilise private boat transfers and expert-led expeditions into the heart of the jungle, focusing on ethical wildlife encounters that support local conservation projects.
The New Standard of Luxury: Ethical & Refined
In Costa Rica, high-end refinement and environmental integrity are inseparable. Our “Purposeful Luxury” model ensures your journey honours the delicate ecosystems you explore without ever compromising on comfort.
-
Hand-Selected Eco-Lodges: We partner exclusively with sustainable sanctuaries that offer world-class service and architectural beauty, from solar-powered rainforest villas to organic farm-to-table dining.
-
Private Chauffeur-Specialists: Navigate the country’s diverse terrain in the sanctuary of your own private vehicle. Your specialist guide handles every detail, providing the flexibility to pause for a hidden waterfall or a sudden wildlife sighting.

Costa Rica: Visa & Entry Requirements for British Citizens
This guide reflects the current understanding of entry rules for travellers using a full ‘British Citizen’ passport. As a dedicated specialist, Earth Trip ensures your documentation is in order, but as requirements can change, we recommend verifying details with the Costa Rican Embassy before departure.
Passport Validity & Condition
-
Validity: While Costa Rican law technically requires your passport to be valid for at least one day beyond your departure, Earth Trip strongly recommends at least six months of validity from your date of entry. This prevents complications with airlines and transit countries (such as the US or Canada).
-
Condition: Your passport must be in excellent physical condition. Immigration authorities in San José are known to deny entry if a passport is damaged, frayed, or has detached pages.
Visas & Length of Stay
-
Tourist Waiver: British nationals do not require a pre-arranged visa to enter Costa Rica.
-
Permitted Stay: Upon arrival, you may be granted a stay of up to 180 days (increased from the previous 90-day limit). The exact duration is at the discretion of the immigration officer.
-
Overstay Penalties: Authorities are strict regarding overstays. Fines of approximately $100 per month apply, and significant overstays may result in a multi-year ban on re-entering the country.
Evidence of Onward Travel & Funds
-
You must be able to provide evidence of a return or onward journey (such as a confirmed flight ticket) upon entry.
-
You may also be asked to show proof of sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay (typically a recent bank statement or credit card).
Transiting via the USA or Canada
Most luxury flights to Costa Rica involve a transit. If you are flying via North America, you must obtain the relevant electronic authorisation at least 72 hours before travel:
-
USA: Requires an ESTA.
-
Canada: Requires an eTA.
Departure Tax
There is a standard departure tax of $29. For almost all major airlines operating in 2026, this is now included in the price of your air ticket. However, if you are travelling on a smaller regional carrier or a private charter, verify if you need to pay this at the airport via cash or card.
Health & Yellow Fever Requirements
-
Yellow Fever: A vaccination certificate is compulsory if you are arriving from a country with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission (this includes many nations in South America and Sub-Saharan Africa). This must be administered at least 10 days before arrival.
-
General Health: Visit your GP or a travel clinic 6–8 weeks before your journey to ensure routine vaccinations are up to date.
Travelling with Minors
-
Dual Nationality: Under local law, any child born in Costa Rica is considered a Costa Rican citizen. If a child has dual British/Costa Rican nationality, they require specific notarised consent from both parents to leave the country.
-
Single Parents: If a minor is travelling with only one parent or a legal guardian, we strongly recommend carrying a notarised letter of consent from the non-travelling parent to avoid delays at immigration.
The Earth Trip Distinction
Navigating entry requirements is part of our seamless service. Your dedicated specialist will review your passport details and transit route during the commissioning phase to ensure every administrative detail is flawlessly handled before you fly.

Costa Rica: Essential Health & Medical Information
Your wellbeing is our priority. Costa Rica offers some of the highest standards of healthcare in Latin America; however, ensuring you are prepared before departure is essential for a seamless journey.
Professional Health Consultation
We recommend consulting your GP or a specialist travel clinic at least eight weeks before your journey. This ensures you are up to date on routine vaccinations and can discuss any personal health requirements.
-
Resources: For the latest clinical advice, visit the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website.
Mosquito-Borne Disease Prevention
Costa Rica is a tropical environment where mosquito-borne illnesses—including Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya—are present.
-
2026 Status: While Dengue cases saw a significant decline in 2025/2026 following successful national vector-control programmes, vigilance is still required, particularly in lowland and coastal regions such as Limón and Guanacaste.
-
Zika Virus: Costa Rica is classified as having a risk of Zika transmission. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, we advise a detailed consultation with your healthcare provider before commissioning your journey.
-
Protection: We recommend using a high-quality DEET-based repellent and wearing long-sleeved, light-coloured clothing during dawn and dusk. Our hand-selected eco-lodges are chosen for their excellent screening and climate-controlled environments to further minimise risk.
Medical Facilities & Care
-
San José Standards: The capital is home to world-class private hospitals, such as Hospital CIMA and Clínica Bíblica, which feature English-speaking staff and state-of-the-art technology.
-
Remote Areas: While the public healthcare system (La Caja) is robust and widespread, facilities in remote rainforest or coastal areas are more basic. Ambulance response times in these regions can vary.
-
Emergency Services: In the event of a medical emergency, dial 911.
Medication & Prescriptions
-
Carrying Medicine: Always carry prescription medication in its original packaging with a copy of your prescription.
-
Local Availability: Costa Rica has an excellent network of pharmacies (Farmacias), such as Fischel or Sucre, where many common medicines are available. However, UK prescriptions cannot be dispensed locally; you would require a consultation with a local doctor to obtain a Costa Rican prescription.
Financial Security & Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is a mandatory requirement for all Earth Trip journeys.
-
Coverage: Your policy must cover private medical treatment and, crucially, medical evacuation (repatriation).
-
Payment: Most private facilities require proof of insurance or a credit card guarantee before admitting patients for non-emergency care. Ensure you have accessible funds to cover any immediate costs while your insurance claim is processed.
The Earth Trip Distinction
As part of our bespoke service, your private chauffeur-specialist is trained to assist with any minor health needs and knows the location of the nearest high-quality medical facilities throughout your route. We handle the logistics, so you can focus entirely on your exploration.

The Costa Rica Climate: A Guide to Seasonal Mastery
Costa Rica’s reputation as a tropical sanctuary is defined by its extraordinary geographic diversity. From the misty high-altitude cloud forests to the sun-drenched Pacific and Caribbean coastlines, the country is a patchwork of distinct microclimates. Understanding these nuances is essential to commissioning a journey that aligns with your specific vision.
The Temperature Profile
Located near the equator, Costa Rica enjoys tropical warmth throughout the year.
-
Coastal Regions: Temperatures remain consistently high, typically ranging from 26°C to 30°C.
-
The Highlands: In mountainous regions like San José, Monteverde, and the Talamanca Range, the air is significantly cooler and crisper, with evening temperatures often dipping to 10°C.
-
The Caribbean Coast: This region experiences higher humidity and more consistent rainfall throughout the year, resulting in exceptionally lush, vibrant landscapes.
Defining the Seasons
While the tropical warmth is constant, the year is defined by its rainfall patterns, traditionally split into two primary seasons:
-
The Dry Season (December – April):
Often considered the most popular window for exploration, this period offers clear skies and bright sunshine, particularly on the Pacific Coast. It is the optimal time for beach-focused retreats and mountain trekking.
-
The Green Season (May – November):
Locally revered as the “Green Season,” this period sees the landscape transform into a deep, emerald paradise. While rain is more frequent, it often arrives in short, dramatic afternoon bursts or overnight, leaving the mornings clear and refreshed.
The Earth Trip Strategic Recommendation
For the discerning traveller, the “Green Season” (particularly June, July, and August) offers a unique advantage. These months often experience a “mini-summer” where rainfall lessens, providing a serene window of exploration with fewer visitors and extraordinarily active wildlife.
Conversely, for those seeking the most reliable sunshine for coastal relaxation, the window from January to March remains the gold standard.
Regional Nuances: When to Visit Where
| Region | Peak Window | What to Expect |
| Pacific Coast (Guanacaste & Nicoya) | Dec – April | Maximum sunshine, perfect for surfing and private villas. |
| The Central Highlands (Monteverde) | Jan – May | Cooler temperatures; ideal for birdwatching and cloud forest hikes. |
| Caribbean Coast (Tortuguero) | Sept – Oct | While the rest of the country is wet, this region often enjoys its driest and calmest weather. |
| The Osa Peninsula | Jan – April | Optimal for deep-jungle expeditions and humpback whale migrations. |
The Earth Trip Distinction
Weather in the tropics is rarely uniform. As your destination specialists, we monitor seasonal shifts and regional microclimates to ensure your itinerary is masterfully paced. Whether you are seeking the peak sun of the Pacific dry season or the quiet, lush solitude of the rainforest in bloom, we ensure your journey is timed to perfection.
