Your Guide to Travelling in Egypt

Egypt is a destination where thousands of years of history meet the energy of modern life.

From the pyramids and ancient temples to the Nile Valley, desert landscapes and Red Sea coastline, Egypt offers an extraordinary variety of experiences within one journey.

Our Egypt Travel Guide covers the best places to visit, things to do, when to travel and practical advice to help you plan your trip.

When you’re ready to start planning, explore our tailor-made Egypt holidays or speak to Jeremy, our Egypt specialist

Why Visit Egypt?

Egypt is one of the world’s great cultural destinations, but there is much more to the country than the pyramids.

You can explore ancient temples in Luxor, sail between Aswan and Luxor on the Nile, discover the lively streets of Cairo, venture into the desert or finish your journey on the Red Sea coast.

The beauty of a tailor-made Egypt holiday is being able to combine these experiences at a pace that suits you.

Best Places to Visit in Egypt

Cairo & Giza

Cairo is a fascinating introduction to Egypt.

Visit the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, explore the city’s historic neighbourhoods and bazaars, and discover the extraordinary collections of ancient Egyptian artefacts in its museums.

Luxor

Luxor is one of the most important destinations for anyone interested in ancient Egypt.

Explore Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple and the Valley of the Kings, where the tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered.

Aswan

Aswan has a slower and more relaxed atmosphere.

Visit Philae Temple, explore the Nile by felucca and discover the city’s Nubian heritage.

Aswan is also the gateway to Abu Simbel, one of Egypt’s most spectacular ancient sites.

The Nile

A Nile cruise is one of the classic ways to experience Egypt.

Travelling between Luxor and Aswan allows you to combine temples and archaeological sites with time on the river.

For a more intimate experience, ask Jeremy about private or smaller-scale Nile sailing options, including traditional dahabiyas.

Abu Simbel

The monumental temples of Abu Simbel were built by Ramses II and are among the most impressive ancient sites in Egypt.

They can be visited as part of a wider Nile itinerary from Aswan.

The Red Sea

After exploring Egypt’s ancient sites, the Red Sea provides an opportunity to slow down.

Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh offer beautiful beaches, warm waters and excellent opportunities for diving and snorkelling.

Alexandria

On Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, Alexandria offers a different perspective on the country, with a history shaped by Egyptian, Greek and Roman influences.

The Egyptian Desert

For travellers with more time, Egypt’s deserts offer a fascinating alternative to the country’s major archaeological sites.

The White Desert, Siwa Oasis and Great Sand Sea can all be incorporated into a more adventurous tailor-made journey.

Things to Do in Egypt

Some of our favourite Egyptian experiences include:

  • Visiting the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx

  • Exploring the temples of Luxor

  • Discovering the Valley of the Kings

  • Sailing the Nile

  • Visiting Abu Simbel

  • Exploring Cairo’s historic neighbourhoods

  • Visiting Khan El Khalili bazaar

  • Taking a felucca ride on the Nile

  • Discovering Nubian culture around Aswan

  • Diving or snorkelling in the Red Sea

  • Exploring Egypt’s desert landscapes

  • Enjoying traditional Egyptian food

Our Egypt Classic Tour & Cruise provides a useful starting point, while our Egypt Discovery family itinerary combines ancient Egypt, a Nile cruise and time on the Red Sea.

Both can be adapted around your interests.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Egypt?

For most travellers, October to April is the most comfortable time to explore Egypt.

Temperatures are generally more pleasant for sightseeing, particularly in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan.

Summer can be extremely hot, especially in Upper Egypt, although the Red Sea remains popular for beach holidays and diving.

If you’re unsure when to travel, Jeremy can advise you on the best time to visit Egypt based on the experiences you want to include.

How Long Do You Need in Egypt?

For a first visit, we’d recommend 10–14 days if you want to combine Cairo, the Nile Valley and some time on the Red Sea without rushing.

A classic journey might include:

Cairo → Luxor → Nile Cruise → Aswan → Abu Simbel → Red Sea

With additional time, you can explore Alexandria, the desert or spend longer in the Nile Valley.

Our Egypt Classic Tour & Cruise is a good starting point for a first journey.

Travelling Around Egypt

Egypt is a large country, and planning the logistics carefully makes a significant difference to your holiday.

We can arrange private drivers, local guides, domestic flights and transfers, so you can concentrate on enjoying the experience.

A Nile cruise can also be an excellent way of travelling between Luxor and Aswan while visiting some of the country’s most important archaeological sites.

Jeremy can help decide how best to combine the different regions without making the itinerary feel rushed.

Preparing For A Trip To Egypt?

Visa Information / Entry requirements to Egypt

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Egypt’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Egypt set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Egyptian Consulate General in the UK.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Egypt, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and have at least one blank page.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

British passport holders travelling to Egypt normally need a visa.

If you are staying for less than 15 days at resorts in Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba, you do not need a visa. You will get a free entry permission stamp on arrival. If you plan to travel outside the resorts or stay more than 15 days, you must get a visa. You can get a visa at Sharm el Sheikh airport or online.

Applying for a visa

You can apply for a visa:

  • online – getting an e-visa in advance can help to prevent delays, tourist e-visas are valid for up to 3 months
  • in person or by post – apply through the Egyptian Consulate General in the UK
  • on arrival in Egypt – approved airports have kiosks in the arrival hall before you reach the immigration counters where you can buy a visa for 25 US dollars (cash only – Egyptian officials prefer dollars, but you may be able to pay in British pounds or euros, visas on arrival are valid for up to 30 days)

British passport holders from British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies cannot apply online.

Visa extensions

You can apply for a visa extension at the Egyptian Passport and Immigration Offices. If you try to leave Egypt on an expired visa, you may face difficulties. You may get a fine if your visa has expired by more than 14 days. Contact the Egyptian Consulate General in the UK for more information.

Visa agents in airports

You do not need to buy a visa from an agent. Agents often charge more than the required 25 US dollars. If an agent harasses you, report the incident to the tourist police in the airport terminal.

Egypt-Sudan border crossing

If you cross the border from Sudan, you can get a visa on arrival for 25 US dollars (cash only).

If you are a British national and have crossed the border without valid documentation, contact the British Embassy in Cairo on + 20 (0) 2 2791 6000. See Regional risks.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Egypt, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk.

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Egypt guide.
