Andringitra National Park

Andringitra National Park is a majestic wilderness of high-altitude prairies, deep granite valleys, and spectacular mountain peaks. Located in the southern highlands, this UNESCO World Heritage site is part of the Rainforests of the Atsinanana. Known as a “climber’s paradise” and a hiker’s dream, the park offers some of the most diverse scenery in Madagascar—stretching from humid tropical forests to alpine meadows that occasionally see frost in the winter.

Experience Highlights

Pic d’Imarivolanitra (Peak Bobby) At 2,658 metres, this is the highest accessible peak in Madagascar. A trek to the summit rewards you with breathtaking 360-degree views of the southern massif. The landscape here is otherworldly, featuring lichen-covered rocks and high-altitude flora that look more like the moon than the tropics.

The Tsaranoro Valley Lying on the edge of the park, the Tsaranoro Valley is home to the world-famous “Tsaranoro Cliff”—a massive 800-metre vertical granite wall. It is a magnet for rock climbers and photographers, offering a dramatic backdrop to the traditional Malagasy villages and emerald-green rice fields below.

Waterfalls and Sacred Forests Andringitra is a vital water source for the region. Numerous waterfalls, such as the Riandahy and Rianbavy (the “male” and “female” falls), cascade down the cliffs. The surrounding “sacred forests” are home to ancient burial sites and a rich variety of medicinal plants used by the local Bara and Betsileo people.

Wildlife & Flora

Andringitra’s wide range of altitudes creates an incredible level of biodiversity.

  • Lemur Diversity: The park is home to over 15 species of lemurs, including the resilient Ring-tailed Lemur and the high-altitude specialist, the Southern Bamboo Lemur.

  • Endemic Flora: You will find over 30 species of orchids and a vast array of succulents and wild mountain flowers. The lower altitudes are covered in dense rainforest, while the higher plateaus feature rare shrubs and grasses found nowhere else on Earth.

Climate & Best Time to Visit

The park’s high altitude means it is much cooler than the coastal regions.

  • April to November: This is the dry season and the best time for trekking. The days are clear and sunny, though night temperatures on the mountain can drop significantly.

  • September to October: Ideal for those interested in botany, as many of the mountain orchids and wildflowers come into bloom during the southern spring.
