Diego Suarez: The Dramatic Northern Gateway of Madagascar

Diego Suarez, known locally as Antsiranana, sits on a spectacular deep-water bay at the northernmost tip of Madagascar. Surrounded by limestone massifs, emerald seas, and the remnants of French colonial architecture, this vibrant port city is the essential base for exploring the diverse landscapes of the north—from rainforests and volcanic peaks to the otherworldly “Red Tsingy.”

Why Diego Suarez is a Traveler’s Landmark

With its wide boulevards and panoramic views of the “Sugar Loaf” island (Nosy Lonjo), Diego Suarez offers an atmosphere unlike any other Malagasy city. It serves as a crossroads of history and nature, where the wind-blown coastline of the Indian Ocean meets the calm waters of the Mozambique Channel. For adventurers, it is the starting point for some of the island’s most visually stunning

Highlights of the Antsiranana Region

1. The Surreal Landscapes of Tsingy Rouge

Located just south of the city, the Tsingy Rouge (Red Tsingy) is a geological phenomenon found nowhere else in Madagascar.

  • The Formation: Unlike the grey limestone Tsingy, these are vibrant red laterite needles carved by erosion.

  • The View: As the sun moves, the canyons shift in color from bright orange to deep crimson, providing a spectacular subject for photography.

2. The Three Bays: Dunes, Pigeons, and Sakalava

Explore the rugged coastline east of the city via a 4×4 journey through the Three Bays.

  • Emerald Sea: Reach the shallow, turquoise lagoon known as the Mer d’Emeraude, a paradise for snorkeling and windsurfing.

  • Coastal Trekking: Walk along deserted white-sand beaches, passing giant baobabs that grow right at the water’s edge and historic French colonial ruins overlooking the reefs.

3. Montagne d’Ambre National Park

A short drive from the heat of the coast takes you to the cool, misty rainforests of Montagne d’Ambre (Amber Mountain).

  • Biodiversity: This volcanic massif is home to crater lakes, towering waterfalls, and a high concentration of endemic wildlife, including the world’s smallest chameleons and the Sanford’s Brown Lemur.

Plan Your Visit: Practical Information

  • Access: Diego Suarez is served by Arrachart Airport (DIE), with regular domestic connections. It is also the northern terminus for road trips coming from Ankarana or Nosy Be.

  • The “Varatraza” Wind: Between June and October, the region experiences strong trade winds, making it a world-class destination for kitesurfing and windsurfing in Sakalava Bay.

  • Best Time to Visit: April to November offers the clearest skies and best conditions for trekking and coastal exploration.
