Cultural and Intellectual Hub

Fianarantsoa once used to be the administrative capital during colonial times. The name Fianarantsoa means “the place where one can learn something good” and was given by Queen Ranavalona 1st honouring the many academic institutions and reputed schools that are based here. It has a reputation as the academic, intellectual and religious capital of the country with the largest number of churches per square metre of the country.

You can stop at the old royal city of Anatirova which was founded in 1830. Anatirova is the old historic center formerly occupied by the Betsileo Rova called Ivœnava (where the dead are hidden). From here you can enjoy a nice panoramic view of the city below.

Main Attractions and Activities in Fianarantsoa

  • Fianarantsoa-Côte Est (FCE) Railway: Fianarantsoa is the western starting point of the legendary FCE train line to Manakara on the east coast. This 163 km journey is an incredible adventure and a vital connection for local communities, winding through tunnels, over bridges, and down the steep escarpment into the rainforest.
  • Old Town Exploration: Walking the steep, narrow streets of the Upper Town is the best way to appreciate the city’s unique history and architecture.
  • Sahambavy Tea Plantation: Located just outside the city, this is Madagascar’s only commercial tea estate, offering tours and tastings amidst beautiful rolling green hills.
  • Gateway to National Parks: Fianarantsoa serves as a convenient base for exploring some of Madagascar’s most important protected areas, including:
    • Ranomafana National Park: A nearby rainforest famous for its immense biodiversity and the endangered golden bamboo lemur.
    • Andringitra National Park: Known for its dramatic mountains, trekking opportunities (including the ascent of Pic Boby), and unique transition forest ecosystems.
    • Anja Community Reserve: Located south of Fianarantsoa, this small reserve is a popular spot to see large numbers of ring-tailed lemurs.
