Marojejy National Park: The Untamed Rainforest & Home of the Silky Sifaka

Marojejy National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Northeast Madagascar, is a vertical wilderness of prehistoric rainforest and granite peaks. Spanning nearly 60,000 hectares, this park offers the most challenging and rewarding trekking in the Indian Ocean, serving as the exclusive sanctuary for the critically endangered Silky Sifaka.

Why Marojejy is a Specialist Destination

Unlike the more accessible parks of the Highlands, Marojejy is for the true nature enthusiast. It is a place of incredible altitudinal diversity, where the ecosystem changes from lowland tropical rainforest to high-altitude mountain scrub. It is often cited by naturalists and wildlife photographers as the most spectacular park in Madagascar due to its raw beauty and the rarity of its inhabitants.

The Search for the “Angel of the Forest”

The primary draw for visitors to Marojejy is the Silky Sifaka (Propithecus candidus).

  • Rare Sightings: Known locally as the “Simpona,” this lemur is famous for its long, snow-white fur and piercing orange eyes. It is one of the world’s 25 most endangered primates.

  • Expert Tracking: Because these lemurs are wild and unhabituated, Earth Trip provides specialist trackers who understand their territory within the steep mountain slopes.

Exploring the Altitudinal Zones

Marojejy is famous for its “verticality,” offering three distinct levels of exploration:

1. Lowland Rainforest (Camp Mantella)

Located at 450m, this lush area is a haven for reptiles and amphibians. Search for the Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko and the brightly colored Mantella frogs. The forest here is dense with giant ferns and ancient hardwoods.

2. The Cloud Forest (Camp Marojejia)

At 775m, you reach the heart of Silky Sifaka territory. This mid-altitude rainforest is draped in mosses and lichens. It is also an excellent area for birdwatching, with chances to see the Helmet Vanga and Madagascar Serpent Eagle.

3. The Granite Peaks (Camp Simpona)

For experienced trekkers, the climb to the summit (2,132m) offers a dramatic transition into high-mountain thickets. On a clear day, the views from the granite cliffs extend all the way to the Indian Ocean.

Plan Your Visit: Practical Information

  • Gateway: The journey begins in Sambava, followed by a drive to the village of Manantenina.

  • Fitness Level: This park requires a good level of physical fitness, as the trails are steep and can be slippery.

  • Accommodation: Stays are in basic but well-located wooden bungalows (camps) within the park, allowing you to stay deep in the forest.

  • Best Time to Visit: The drier months from April to June and September to November offer the best trekking conditions.
