Sainte Marie Island (Nosy Boraha)
Sainte Marie, or Nosy Boraha, is a tropical sanctuary located just 8 kilometres off Madagascar’s eastern coast. This narrow, 50-kilometre-long island is a place of “mora mora” (slowly, slowly) time, where lush emerald forests meet secluded white-sand coves. Known for its authenticity and rich maritime legends, Sainte Marie offers an enchanting blend of history and paradise—a destination where you can walk through the Golden Age of Piracy in the morning and witness the majestic dance of whales in the afternoon.
Experience Highlights
The Golden Age of Piracy In the 17th and 18th centuries, Sainte Marie was a notorious stronghold for over a thousand pirates. Its sheltered bays and strategic location on Indian Ocean trade routes made it the ideal base for legendary buccaneers like William Kidd, Thomas Tew, and Olivier Levasseur (known as “La Buse”).
-
The Pirate Cemetery: Perched on a hill overlooking the bay near the main town of Ambodifotatra, this is the world’s only known pirate cemetery. Weathered gravestones carved with the iconic skull and crossbones offer a haunting glimpse into the island’s swashbuckling past.
-
Sunken Treasures: For divers, the surrounding waters are a treasure trove. Several pirate shipwrecks lie on the seabed, including those belonging to Captain Condent and Captain Kidd, providing a silent, underwater museum of maritime history.
Humpback Whale Migration Beyond its pirate lore, the island is the premier destination for one of nature’s most moving spectacles. From July to September, humpback whales migrate from the Antarctic to the warm, sheltered channel between Sainte Marie and the mainland to mate, give birth, and nurse their young. You can take boat trips with local specialists to witness these 40-ton giants breaching and tail-slapping—a celebration of life that culminates in the island’s vibrant “Whale Festival” every July.
Pristine Beaches & Island Life Sainte Marie is a paradise for relaxation and water-based activities. The calm, turquoise lagoons are perfect for snorkelling, scuba diving, and kitesurfing among reefs teeming with turtles and tropical fish.
-
Île aux Nattes (Nosy Nato): A short traditional canoe ride from the southern tip brings you to this secluded, car-free islet. It is a true “Robinson Crusoe” experience with pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters.
-
Exploring the Interior: The island is easily explored by motorbike, scooter, or bicycle. Paths lead you through lush coconut groves, past traditional fishing villages, and toward secluded natural pools.
Wildlife & Culture
The island’s nature and culture are deeply intertwined. As you explore, you’ll encounter the warm hospitality of the Sainte-Marienne people, whose culture is a unique blend of Malagasy and French influences.
-
Terrestrial Nature: In the dense forests, look for the rare Queen of Madagascar orchid and various lemur species.
-
Gourmet Heritage: Enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and world-class fresh seafood that defines the island’s culinary scene.
Climate & Best Time to Visit
Sainte Marie enjoys a tropical climate and can be visited year-round, though the seasons offer specific highlights:
-
July to September: Peak season for whale watching and the Whale Festival.
-
April to December: The best window for clear skies, diving, and exploring the island’s coastal trails.
