Zombitse-Vohibasia National Park: A Birdwatcher’s Paradise in the Southwest

Zombitse-Vohibasia National Park is a rare remnant of dry deciduous forest in Southwestern Madagascar. Located along the RN7 between Isalo and Tulear, this 36,000-hectare sanctuary acts as a vital transition zone between the humid eastern forests and the arid spiny thickets of the south, housing species found nowhere else on Earth.

Why Zombitse-Vohibasia is a Wildlife Landmark

Zombitse-Vohibasia is world-renowned for its high level of endemism. The park’s relatively flat terrain and open forest structure make it one of Madagascar’s most rewarding locations for accessible wildlife viewing.

  • A Birdwatcher’s Dream: Nearly half of Madagascar’s endemic bird species reside within these boundaries. The park’s star attraction is the Appert’s Tetraka, a rare songbird found nowhere else on Earth. Other avian highlights include the Giant Coua, Crested Coua, and various species of colorful Vangas.

  • The “Dancing” Sifakas: You are almost guaranteed to spot the iconic Verreaux’s Sifaka as they leap gracefully between the dry-forest canopy. The park is also a sanctuary for the locally endemic Hubbard’s Sportive Lemur and the social Red-fronted Brown Lemur.

  • Reptile Rarities: Search the foliage for the world’s second-largest chameleon, the Oustalet’s Chameleon, and the beautifully patterned, locally endemic Standing’s Day Gecko.

  • A Unique Botanical World: Witness a forest of remarkable adaptation where drought-resistant plants thrive. The landscape is dominated by towering Baobabs (Adansonia za and A. grandidieri), while the forest floor often reveals the delicate, brightly colored blooms of native orchids.

Plan Your Visit: Practical Information

  • Location: Perfectly situated on the RN7 highway, roughly 90km west of Isalo National Park and 150km east of Tulear.

  • Accessibility: The trails are mostly flat and well-maintained, making it an excellent choice for families or those looking for a less strenuous trekking experience.

  • The Experience: A typical visit lasts 2 to 3 hours, making it the ideal morning stop during the drive toward the Mozambique Channel.

  • Best Time to Visit: September to December is the peak season for birdwatching as species are most active and vocal.
