Eden Lodge – Nosy Be, Madagascar

Magnificent Ecolodges

Eden Lodge is located on Baobab Beach only half an hour from Nosy Be island by boat.

Nested in a protected nature reserve, the amazing view while arriving at the first 100% solar powered hotel in the world is breathtaking. A pure white sand beach, bordered by lush virgin forest and dotted with hundreds years old baobab trees are waiting to welcome you. Eden Lodge’s grounds extend over more than 8 hectares and offer protected exceptional biodiversity, where forest and ocean join.

The 8 ecolodges of Eden Lodge are mid-way between a traditional construction and a luxury tent and they blend in perfectly with the environment. Each one offers spacious accommodation where you can relax in complete privacy, in a natural park, directly on the beach. The lodges use local materials, such as Anjanojano stone, the trunks of fallen trees and coconut or ravinala (Traveller’s palm) leaves.
The innovative architecture of these beachfront lodges allows air to circulate freely, thanks to a ravinala roof and a tented canopy with large openings protected by mosquito nets. A Dyson fan will provide you fresh air on demand, rather than air conditioning.
A spectacular bathroom opens out onto a terrace where you can enjoy a massage and other beauty treatments (each lodge is equipped with a massage table in the privacy of the garden).
The bedroom also has its own private balcony, an ideal spot to relax and enjoy the ocean-view.
Eden Lodge conjures up the spirit and atmosphere of a tented camp with the protection and comfort of a permanent lodge, entirely powered with solar energy.
The lodges are equipped with every comfort, each with a king size rosewood bed, enveloped by a full, beautifully embroidered mosquito net, a work area with an ocean-view, a safe and minibar.

Enjoy your cocktails and meals in a magnificent lodge designed for relaxation. The creative cuisine is inspired by spicy flavours of Madagascar and by the French. The menu is composed exclusively of fresh products such as seafood brought daily to the lodge by the nearby fishermen, plus the Malagasy specialities like zebu fillet and a wide selection of exotic fruits.

At any moment of your stay, enjoy a traditional Madagascan massage using essential oil, or a traditional care, in the comfort of your lodge on your personal table massage. You can also try environmentally friendly water sports such as Hobbiecat, sea kayaks, paddle, snorkelling, or windsurfing along with many more activities. Certain seasons you can share the magic of nesting or hatching of sea turtles just in front of your lodge, or being regaled by the sight of dolphins, and even migrating whales, swimming just a stone’s throw from the shore.

Eden Lodge – Nosy Be, Madagascar

Situated on the protected Baobab Beach on the mainland peninsula of Madagascar, directly opposite Nosy Be, Eden Lodge is a pioneering eco-luxury retreat. It holds the prestigious distinction of being the first hotel in the world to be powered 100% by solar energy and is a certified Green Globe establishment. Set within a 15-hectare private park where centuries-old baobabs meet the turquoise waters of the Mozambique Channel, it offers an exclusive “luxury tented camp” experience for those seeking total immersion in nature without sacrificing comfort.

Rooms & Accommodation

The lodge consists of eight magnificent luxury lodges, spaced far apart to ensure absolute privacy and a feeling of being alone in the wild.

  • Tented Suites: Each lodge is a sophisticated blend of traditional stone construction and high-quality canvas, covering 75 square metres of living space.

  • Luxury Interiors: Features include king-size beds, rosewood furniture, and elegant bathrooms that combine indoor comfort with an outdoor feel.

  • Beachfront Terraces: Every suite opens directly onto the white sand, just steps away from the water’s edge.

Dining

The dining experience at Eden Lodge is a celebration of “sea-to-table” freshness and organic Malagasy ingredients.

  • Open-Air Restaurant: Meals are served in a beautiful pavilion overlooking the sea, where the atmosphere is relaxed and the dress code is “barefoot elegant.”

  • Daily Inspiration: The menu changes daily, featuring freshly caught lobster, mangrove crab, and locally sourced zebu, all enhanced by the resort’s own aromatic herb garden.

  • Tropical Sundowners: The beach bar is the perfect place to enjoy a freshly squeezed fruit juice or a vanilla-infused rum as the sun sets over the archipelago.

Facilities

Eden Lodge prioritises a low-impact lifestyle, with facilities designed to complement the natural surroundings.

  • The Baobab Park: The lodge is located within a stunning botanical park home to eight majestic baobabs and dozens of endemic plant species.

  • The Massage Area: Located directly on the beach under the shade of the trees, guests can enjoy traditional massages using organic essential oils produced in Madagascar.

  • Eco-Infrastructure: In addition to its 100% solar power system, the lodge uses sustainable water management and follows a strict zero-plastic policy.

Activities

The location on Baobab Beach offers a unique land-sea vantage point for exploring the Nosy Be region.

  • Marine Life: The bay is a sanctuary for giant sea turtles, which can often be seen swimming just off the lodge’s beach. Snorkelling equipment is provided for exploring the nearby coral patches.

  • Wildlife Encounters: The park is home to several species of lemurs, including the black lemur, as well as chameleons and a wide variety of tropical birds.

  • Guided Treks: Explore the primary forest or walk to nearby traditional villages to learn about the local Sakalava culture.

  • Sea Safaris: The lodge can organise private boat trips to the uninhabited islands of the archipelago or deep-sea fishing excursions.

Sustainability & Community

Eden Lodge is a global benchmark for sustainable tourism. Beyond its carbon-neutral energy profile, the lodge is deeply committed to social responsibility. It has funded the construction of a primary school and a medical clinic for the local community and provides ongoing support for local education. By employing almost exclusively from the neighbouring villages and promoting local handicrafts, Eden Lodge ensures that its guests’ stay contributes meaningfully to the region’s prosperity.

Earth Trip Opinion

Earth Trip recommends Eden Lodge as the definitive choice for travellers who want to experience the “wild” side of Madagascar without compromising on luxury. It is rare to find a property that is so genuinely committed to environmental preservation while still delivering a high-end, polished service. We love it for its silence—the absence of engine noise due to its solar power and remote location creates a restorative atmosphere that is truly unique. It is a place where luxury isn’t about gold taps, but about the space to breathe, the ancient trees, and the turtles swimming in the bay.

FAQ

How do I reach Eden Lodge? The lodge is accessible only by boat. A private transfer will pick you up from Madirokely or the airport beach for a 30-minute boat ride across the bay.

Is there air conditioning? In keeping with its 100% solar and eco-friendly design, the lodges use natural ventilation and ceiling fans rather than energy-intensive air conditioning.

Are there mosquitoes? Being in a tropical forest, mosquitoes are present, but the lodges are equipped with high-quality mosquito nets and the resort provides natural repellent.

Is there Wi-Fi? Yes, complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the main lounge and restaurant areas, though the focus here is very much on a “digital detox.”
