Entremer Hotel, Belo-sur-Mer

A Beachfront Hotel

A Rustic Coastal Gem at the Edge of the World

Entremer is an intimate, family-run eco-lodge situated in the secluded fishing village of Belo-sur-Mer, approximately 80 kilometers south of Morondava. Nestled on a narrow sandbank between a turquoise lagoon and the Mozambique Channel, this “boutique-rustic” hotel offers a true castaway experience. It is the ideal destination for those seeking to escape the well-trodden paths and witness the authentic coastal life of the Vezo people, famous for their traditional dhow construction and seafaring heritage.

Rooms & Accommodation

The lodge consists of just six spacious wooden bungalows, each positioned to take full advantage of the sea breeze and the sounds of the rhythmic waves.

  • Bungalow Varieties: The property offers three standard and three family bungalows (each with two bedrooms), making it a versatile choice for couples and small groups alike.

  • Handcrafted Comfort: The rooms are built using local timber and traditional techniques, featuring polished wooden floors, very comfortable bedding, and essential mosquito netting.

  • Eco-Friendly Design: To protect the delicate coastal ecosystem, Entremer utilizes solar energy for 24-hour electricity. The bathrooms are clean and functional; while the water is typically unheated, the tropical climate makes for a refreshing experience, and the staff are happy to provide solar-heated water on request.

  • Private Verandas: Each bungalow features a deep porch with deckchairs—the perfect vantage point to watch the white-sailed dhows pass by at dawn.

Dining

The central restaurant at Entremer is a culinary highlight of the Menabe region, overseen by the owner and chef, Laurence.

  • Ocean-to-Table Gastronomy: Given its isolation, the food is remarkably fresh and varied. The focus is on seafood caught that morning by local fishermen—expect succulent lobster, mangrove crabs, and expertly grilled fish.

  • Generous Table d’Hôte: Meals are served in a “Table d’Hôte” style, fostering a communal and welcoming atmosphere. For those with specific dietary requirements, Laurence can prepare excellent poultry or vegetarian alternatives with advance notice.

  • Sunset Bar: The open-air bar overlooking the beach is a social hub where guests gather to enjoy a cold drink and watch the sun sink below the horizon of the Mozambique Channel.

Facilities & Experience

Staying at Entremer is about reconnecting with nature and the slow pace of Malagasy village life.

  • Marine Adventures: The lodge provides snorkeling gear and kayaks for exploring the coral reefs of the nearby “Nosy” islands. Between July and September, the waters around Belo-sur-Mer become a prime spot for whale watching.

  • Cultural Connection: A short walk along the beach brings you to the heart of Belo-sur-Mer, where you can watch shipwrights build massive wooden dhows by hand—a craft that has remained unchanged for centuries.

  • Kirindy Mite National Park: The hotel serves as a gateway to the nearby Kirindy Mite National Park, a unique transition zone between the dry forest and the coastal mangroves, home to various lemur species and spectacular birdlife.

Sustainability & Community

Entremer is a pioneer of responsible tourism in this remote region, operating with a deep respect for the local community and environment.

  • Solar Power & Water Conservation: The property is entirely off-grid, relying on solar panels for energy and carefully managed well water, reflecting a commitment to minimal environmental impact.

  • Community Integration: The hotel is a significant supporter of the local village, employing local staff and sourcing almost all ingredients from the neighboring fishermen and salt farmers.

  • Eco-Lodge Philosophy: From the use of sustainable building materials to the reduction of plastic waste, every detail is designed to preserve the pristine beauty of this arid, castaway peninsula.
