The Rooms at Hôtel de la Plage

The hotel offers a range of bungalows built in a traditional style that blends effortlessly with the coastal environment. Constructed using local materials, the rooms are bright and airy, designed to keep guests cool in the tropical heat. Each bungalow features a private terrace—many of which open directly onto the sand—providing a perfect vantage point to watch the traditional Vezo pirogues sail past at sunrise.

Dining and Facilities

The beachfront restaurant is the heart of the hotel, serving up a delicious array of international cuisine and Malagasy specialties. With a strong focus on “sea-to-table” dining, the menu features the daily catch from the local fishermen, including succulent lobster and zebu steaks. Guests can enjoy their meals with their toes in the sand, followed by a sundowner at the bar as the sky turns a brilliant orange over the lagoon.

The hotel supports the local village through employment and sourcing, and encourages guests to engage in eco-friendly excursions that respect the nearby coral reefs and the unique flora of the spiny forest.

A Note from Aleem – Earth Trip Madagascar Specialist

“Hôtel de la Plage is exactly what it sounds like—a classic, no-fuss beach stay that captures the essence of Ifaty. I often recommend this spot for travelers who want to be as close to the water as possible. There is something incredibly special about waking up and stepping straight onto the beach. It’s the perfect place to disconnect and simply enjoy the natural beauty of the Madagascar coastline.”

Frequently Asked Questions: Ifaty & Tulear

What activities can I do while staying at Hôtel de la Plage? The hotel is perfectly positioned for water-based activities such as snorkeling, diving, and seasonal whale watching (July to September). On land, we highly recommend a morning visit to the Reniala Spiny Forest to see the ancient baobab trees and local birdlife.

How do I get to Hôtel de la Plage? Most guests arrive via a domestic flight from Antananarivo to Tulear (Toliara). From Tulear, we arrange a transfer—often a 4×4 journey or a boat transfer depending on the season—which takes approximately one hour to reach the Ifaty coastline.

Is the beach at Ifaty suitable for swimming? Yes, the lagoon at Ifaty is protected by a large coral reef, meaning the waters are generally calm and safe for swimming. At low tide, the water can recede significantly, which is the perfect time to explore the tide pools or watch the local fishermen.
