Salary Bay Hotel description:
Salary Bay is a breathtaking eco-retreat perched on the edge of a pristine white-sand bay, roughly 100km north of Tulear. Surrounded by a turquoise lagoon and a protective coral reef, this lodge offers a true “end-of-the-world” feeling, where the deep blue of the Mozambique Channel meets the primary forest of the south. It is a sanctuary of peace and natural beauty, perfect for those looking to escape the beaten path.
The Rooms at Salary Bay
The lodge features ten bungalows of 75m², each perfectly integrated into the primary dune to offer total privacy and panoramic views of the lagoon. Built using noble and traditional materials such as rosewood, katrafay, and sisal, the bungalows respect local architecture while providing modern comfort. Each unit is airy and naturally ventilated, featuring a private terrace with a hammock and a mezzanine level, making them ideal for both couples and families. For larger groups, the property also offers a 180m² villa with four independent rooms and a sprawling common living area.
Dining and Facilities
The restaurant at Salary Bay is a highlight of the stay, where the flavors and spices of the island—including wild ginger, lime, pink peppercorns, and coconut—are used to enhance the freshest local catch. Guests can savor spiny lobsters, shrimp, and seafood alongside specialty dishes like zebu and duck breast. Facilities include an infinity pool overlooking the lagoon, a small spa offering traditional massages, and a library area, all operating in harmony with the sun, moon, and tides through the use of solar energy and water.
Sustainable Travel
In line with the Earth Trip philosophy, Salary Bay is a leader in responsible tourism. The lodge works closely with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) to support the local Marine Protected Area (MPA). By employing staff from the neighboring nomadic Vezo villages and investing in community education and health through the “Salary Bay Association,” the lodge ensures that tourism provides a long-term, positive legacy for the people and the delicate coral ecosystems of the north coast.
A Note from Aleem – Earth Trip Madagascar Specialist
“Salary Bay is one of those rare places where you can truly live at the rhythm of nature. What I love most is the sheer space—from the 75m² bungalows to the deserted beach that feels like it belongs entirely to you. It’s the ultimate base for water sports lovers; whether you want to try Subwing, go scuba diving on untouched reefs, or head out on a traditional dugout canoe, the team here makes it feel like a personal adventure.”
