The Litchi Tree Hotel

Discover Joffreville

The Litchi Tree is a boutique hotel located in Joffreville at the foot of the Amber Mountain National Park. Conveniently located only 45 minutes from Diego Suarez airport, The Litchi Tree welcomes you to enjoy a fine moment of calm and serenity, in this ancient 1902 house that was once the home of Marshal Joffre and the French admiralty.

The Litchi Tree features six rooms decorated with the noble wood of Madagascar in a harmonious combination of contemporary and traditional design. The spacious rooms and en suite bathrooms are all equipped with solar heated water from the Amber Mountain waterfall.

The 5 hectare colonial property offers litchi and mango trees. In the garden you may spot creatures such as chameleons and leaf tailed geckos. Relax in nature and contemplate the view over the Diego Suarez bay and the Mozambique Channel from the main terrace.

The French chef uses exclusively local produce to create original cuisine. Discover a wide wine selection to enjoy with your fine cuisine.

The Litchi Tree hotel summary

Set in a meticulously restored colonial mansion from 1902, The Litchi Tree is a characterful boutique hideaway perched in the cool, misty heights of Joffreville.

Once the residence of Marshal Joffre and the French Admiralty, this intimate guesthouse serves as the perfect gateway to the Amber Mountain National Park. Located just 45 minutes from Diego Suarez, it offers a refreshing highland climate and sweeping views that stretch across the forest canopy all the way to the turquoise waters of Diego Suarez Bay and the Mozambique Channel. It is a place where history, French culinary flair, and the wild biodiversity of Northern Madagascar meet.

The Property

The lodge is centered around a grand colonial villa that has been lovingly returned to its former glory. The interiors are a stylish fusion of European heritage and Malagasy warmth, featuring white-washed walls, minimal but elegant wooden carvings, and a cozy library. Outside, the property is nestled within five hectares of lush gardens—filled, naturally, with litchi and mango trees—where chameleons and leaf-tailed geckos are frequent visitors. After a day of trekking, the “small red lounge” or the Parisian-style bar offers an inviting spot to sample local aged rums.

The Rooms

With only six individually styled rooms, The Litchi Tree maintains an exclusive and peaceful atmosphere:

  • The Conversion: Housed in the elegantly converted former stable blocks at the back of the main house, the rooms offer modern comfort within a historic shell.

  • Design: Each room features polished palissandre-wood floors, striking colors that pop against white walls, and furniture handcrafted by local artisans using sustainable wood.

  • Amenities: All rooms are equipped with en-suite bathrooms and large showers, with water heated by solar power sourced directly from the Amber Mountain waterfalls.

Experiences

The Litchi Tree is an ideal base for exploring the unique ecosystems and geological wonders of the far north.

  • Amber Mountain National Park: Just 4km away, discover a rainforest paradise of sacred waterfalls, crater lakes, and seven species of lemurs, including the crowned lemur.

  • The Red Tsingy: Arrange a 4×4 excursion to witness the surreal, needle-like limestone formations that glow deep crimson in the sunlight.

  • Coastal Escapes: Head down from the heights to explore the “Three Bays” or take a boat to the Emerald Sea for world-class snorkeling in crystal-clear lagoons.

  • Gastronomy: Enjoy “fusion” dining where the French chef blends classic techniques with Malagasy spices and fresh ingredients from the Joffreville markets.

Earth Trip Opinion: The Litchi Tree is a gem for those who love properties with a soul. The combination of its colonial history, the cooler mountain air, and the exceptionally high standard of food makes it a standout choice. It feels less like a hotel and more like staying at the private estate of a very tasteful friend.
