Nosy Tanikely Marine National Park

Nosy Tanikely, meaning “the island of small earth,” is a breathtaking marine sanctuary located just a short boat ride from Nosy Be. As Madagascar’s premier underwater national park, it is widely considered the best snorkeling and diving destination in the region. The island is surrounded by a vibrant coral reef that remains remarkably healthy and protected, offering a “natural aquarium” experience where the water is crystal clear and teeming with life.

Experience Highlights

World-Class Snorkeling & Diving The main draw of Nosy Tanikely is its spectacular coral reef. Because the park is a “no-take” zone, the marine life is incredibly relaxed and abundant. Within just a few metres of the white sandy shore, you can find yourself swimming alongside hawksbill and green sea turtles, colorful anemonefish, huge schools of red snapper, and occasional rays. The shallow, calm waters make it an ideal spot for beginners and experienced divers alike.

The Panoramic Lighthouse Beyond the beach, a short forest trail leads you to the island’s summit, where a historic lighthouse built in 1908 still stands. Climbing to the top rewards you with a stunning 360-degree view of the Nosy Be archipelago and the vast turquoise expanse of the Mozambique Channel. It is the perfect vantage point for photographers to capture the contrasting blues of the deep ocean and the shallow reefs.

Pristine White Sands The island itself is a postcard-perfect tropical retreat. With its powdery white sand and overhanging trees providing natural shade, it is a magnificent place to relax between snorkeling sessions. Most visits include a traditional Malagasy seafood picnic prepared on the beach, featuring fresh catch and local coconut rice.

Wildlife & Nature

While the underwater world is the star, the terrestrial part of the park is equally fascinating.

  • Terrestrial Residents: During the walk to the lighthouse, look out for the resident colony of fruit bats hanging from the trees and the curious Black Lemurs that inhabit the island’s interior.

  • Marine Biodiversity: The reef is home to an incredible variety of hard and soft corals, providing a habitat for hundreds of species of tropical fish, moray eels, and nudibranchs.

Climate & Best Time to Visit

Nosy Tanikely is a year-round destination, but the conditions vary slightly by season:

  • April to December: These months offer the best underwater visibility and calmest seas, perfect for snorkeling and diving.

  • August to September: This period coincides with the humpback whale migration in the surrounding waters, and you may even spot them breaching during the boat journey to the island.
