Three Bays & Battle of Madagascar

Located at the northernmost tip of the island near Antsiranana (Diego Suarez), the Three Bays represent one of Madagascar’s most dramatic coastal landscapes. This experience is a rare blend of wild, turquoise beauty and “forgotten” history, where the pristine shores of the Indian Ocean meet the remnants of a pivotal World War II campaign.

Experience Highlights

The Three Turquoise Bays Traverse a series of three spectacular bays—Sakalava Bay, Pigeon Bay, and Dunes Bay—each offering a different perspective of the coastline.

  • Sakalava Bay: Famed for its trade winds and coral reefs, this is a world-class destination for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

  • Pigeon & Dunes Bays: These are the quiet counterparts, where you will find secluded white sands, crystal-clear swimming waters, and coastal dunes that feel entirely untouched by time.

The Battle of Madagascar (Operation Ironclad) As you navigate the sandy tracks between the bays, the landscape reveals a hidden past. This region was the site of Operation Ironclad in May 1942, a British amphibious assault launched to seize the strategic deep-water harbour of Diego Suarez from Vichy French control. You can still explore abandoned artillery, rusting fortifications, and coastal bunkers—material evidence of the last conflict ever fought between Britain and France.

Cap Miné & The Sugarloaf The journey often leads to the historic Cap Miné Lighthouse, guarding the entrance to the second-largest natural bay in the world. From the nearby cliffs, you can view the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain (Nosy Lonjo), a sacred volcanic islet that rises dramatically from the centre of the bay.

Wildlife & Nature

The arid, wind-sculpted landscape of the north is home to unique flora and fauna that differ greatly from the eastern rainforests.

  • Coastal Baobabs: Along the 4×4 tracks, you will encounter ancient, bulbous baobabs (Adansonia suarezensis) that have adapted to the salty sea air and rocky terrain.

  • Birdlife & Marine Life: Pigeon Bay remains a haven for coastal bird colonies, while the rocky outcrops around Dunes Bay are frequent nesting sites for sea turtles.

Climate & Best Time to Visit

The best time to experience the Three Bays is during the dry season from April to November.

  • June to October: During these months, the Varatraza (strong trade winds) are at their peak, making it the premier time for water sports enthusiasts.

  • April & November: These shoulder months offer calmer waters for those focused on swimming and photography, with clear skies and warm highland temperatures.
