Iharana Bush Camp, Ankarana
An Artistic Sanctuary Facing the Tsingy Massif
Iharana Bush Camp is a uniquely creative eco-lodge situated on the edge of a massive lake, directly facing the dramatic limestone pinnacles of the Ankarana Massif. Located about 16 km from the town of Ambilobe, the camp was designed by world-renowned speleologist Jean Claude Dobrilla. It represents a “living architecture” concept, where natural materials and traditional Malagasy building techniques create a seamless transition between the lodge and the wild, rocky landscape.
Rooms & Accommodation
The camp features 16 to 18 individual cabanas (or “cottages”), each hand-crafted with ochre-colored laterite walls and satrana-thatched roofs.
-
Traditional Design: Inspired by traditional Malagasy housing, the cabanas utilize plants, roots, creepers, and wood in their construction. The interiors feature separate levels for bedrooms and bathrooms to maximize the open feel and the views.
-
Lakeside Cabanas: Four premier cabanas are situated directly on the lake’s edge, featuring private luxury balconies that look out at the foot of the Tsingy—perfect for twilight viewing.
-
Eco-Living: The camp is almost entirely solar-powered. Cabanas have solar-heated water and lights, but purposefully lack electrical plugs to maintain a peaceful, disconnected atmosphere. (A central charging station is available in the main area).
-
Sleep Quality: All rooms are equipped with premium bedding and high-quality mosquito nets to ensure a comfortable night’s rest in the tropical bush.
Dining & Atmosphere
The heart of the camp is its wide, open-sided restaurant and bar, which continues out onto an expansive balcony.
-
Malagasy-Oriental Fusion: The restaurant combines European specialties with a slight Oriental touch. They are famous for their homemade jams served at breakfast and a daily manager’s reception.
-
Creative Spaces: The bar area features chairs carved from old tree trunks and tables made from smooth wood, all softened by plants and leather stools. At night, the area is illuminated by the ambient glow of polished amber.
-
Sunset Rituals: The wide balcony is considered one of the best spots in northern Madagascar for sundowners, offering a panoramic view as the sun sets over the Tsingy massif.
Facilities & Experience
Iharana Bush Camp serves as both a place of relaxation and a launchpad for deep geological exploration.
-
Natural Emerald Pool: An “emerald” outdoor swimming pool provides a refreshing dip with a direct view of the jagged limestone cliffs.
-
Speleological Adventures: Guests can explore the nearby Mandresy Cave or hike through the Tsingy to the Ambatomiloloha viewpoint. For the more adventurous, there are opportunities to abseil or zip-line into caves.
-
Lake Exploration: Discover the quiet Laka Laka lake by canoe—a fantastic opportunity for birdwatching and soaking in the silence of the reserve.
-
Cultural Immersion: The camp offers bicycle rentals for exploring surrounding villages, allowing guests to observe daily life and meet the local community.
-
Wellness: Traditional Malagasy massages are offered in an open-air pavilion, using local oils to help guests unwind after a day of hiking.
Sustainability & Community
The camp is a pioneer in low-impact tourism in the Ankarana region.
-
Solar Energy: By relying on solar panels for hot water and lighting, the property minimizes its environmental footprint within the fragile reserve ecosystem.
-
Natural Materials: The use of local laterite, wood, and thatch supports traditional craftsmanship and ensures the buildings will eventually return to the earth without leaving a trace.
-
Staff-Led Excursions: Nature walks and excursions are led by well-versed local staff, providing authentic insights into the park’s biodiversity and folklore.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do we reach the camp? Your private Earth Trip driver will manage the journey along the RN6. The camp is approximately 5 to 6 hours from Diego Suarez or 4 hours from Ankify. The final 16 km track to the camp is rugged, but we provide a high-clearance 4×4 for your comfort.
Are there lemurs at the camp? Yes! Families of lemurs, including Crowned and Sanford’s brown lemurs, frequently visit the trees surrounding the cabanas. The lake area is also excellent for spotting chameleons and unusual bird species.
Is it suitable for children? Children are welcome, and the camp offers family-friendly amenities like a snack bar and a picnic area. However, parents should be aware that there are no cribs or infant beds available, and the rugged terrain of the Tsingy is best suited for older, active children.
Expert Insight
“Iharana is more like a work of art than a hotel. Watching the limestone cliffs turn gold from your balcony as the sun sets is one of those quintessential Madagascar moments. Because we pre-arrange your cave explorations and provide a private driver, you can dive deep into the geology of Ankarana and return to a stylish, candle-lit dinner by the lake.” — Aleem, Madagascar Specialist
