Mikea Lodge description:
Mikea Lodge is a secluded sanctuary hidden between the emerald canopy of the Mikea Forest and the brilliant turquoise waters of the Mozambique Channel. Located on a pristine beach north of Tulear, this eco-lodge offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Madagascar’s most mysterious and biologically diverse regions. The Rooms at Mikea Lodge
The lodge features elegant safari-style tented bungalows elevated on wooden platforms, blending the adventurous spirit of a bush camp with the comforts of a high-end resort. Each tent is spacious and breezy, featuring a private terrace that overlooks the white sands and the lagoon. The interiors are tastefully decorated with natural materials, offering a rustic yet refined atmosphere. Tucked under the shade of indigenous trees, these bungalows provide a cool retreat from the tropical sun while keeping you immersed in the sights and sounds of the surrounding wilderness.
Dining and Facilities
The central lodge building houses an open-air restaurant and bar that celebrates the fusion of Malagasy and French culinary traditions. With a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients, the menu highlights the bounties of the sea, with grilled lobster, prawns, and reef fish often served just hours after being caught. Guests can enjoy their meals with their feet in the sand, or relax in the lounge area as the sun dips below the horizon. The lodge also features a wellness space where traditional massages using local essential oils are available to soothe the senses.
Sustainable Travel
In harmony with the Earth Trip ethos, Mikea Lodge operates with a profound respect for its unique surroundings. The lodge is named after the elusive Mikea people, the traditional forest dwellers of this region, and works to support their heritage and the conservation of the Mikea National Park. By utilizing solar energy and implementing sustainable water practices, the lodge ensures that the fragile balance between the ancient forest and the coral lagoon is preserved for the future.
A Note from Aleem – Earth Trip Madagascar Specialist
“Mikea Lodge is one of those special places that feels completely disconnected from the modern world. What I find most fascinating is the duality of the landscape; you have this incredible, world-class beach right in front of you, but just behind the lodge lies the ‘Spiny Forest’ with its strange, endemic plants and rare birds. It’s an adventure getting here, but once you arrive, the peace is absolute. It is the perfect spot for travelers who want a luxury beach experience that feels genuinely wild and off the beaten track.”
Frequently Asked Questions: Mikea Lodge & The Forest
What makes the Mikea Forest so special? The Mikea Forest is one of the last remaining dry deciduous forests in Madagascar and is home to high levels of endemism. During your stay, we can arrange guided walks to see the unique ‘Baobab’ species, rare birds like the Subdesert Mesite, and learn about the traditional way of life of the Mikea people who have lived in harmony with this forest for centuries.
Can I see whales from Mikea Lodge? Yes! If you visit between July and September, the humpback whales migrate through the channel directly in front of the lodge. You can often see them breaching from the comfort of your private terrace, or we can arrange a boat excursion for a closer encounter.
How do I reach the lodge? Mikea Lodge is located in a remote area north of Tulear. The most common way to arrive is via a scenic 4×4 transfer through the sandy coastal tracks, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. Alternatively, boat transfers from Tulear can be arranged depending on the weather and sea conditions, offering a beautiful perspective of the coastline.
