Visiting the village of Ambodiforaha is not to be missed; the local population sell traditional wooden crafts and spices. You will be able to admire a group of village women who will perform a folk dance.

Dounia Forest Lodge details:

Nestled within a lush private reserve on the edge of the Indian Ocean, Dounia Forest Lodge offers an extraordinary blend of tropical forest and coastal serenity. At Earth Trip, we select this property for its profound isolation, its elegant eco-conscious design, and the rare opportunity it provides to observe lemurs and marine life in a single location.

The lodge is an ideal sanctuary for travelers who desire an intimate connection with nature, away from the more frequented tourist circuits, where the sounds of the rainforest meet the rhythm of the sea.

Rooms & Accommodation

The accommodations at Dounia Forest Lodge consist of elevated timber bungalows designed to maximize air circulation and provide immersive views of the surrounding canopy. Constructed using sustainable local materials, the rooms offer a refined, “barefoot luxury” feel. Each bungalow features expansive private decking, high-quality en-suite bathrooms, and large windows that invite the forest indoors. The placement of the bungalows ensures total privacy, allowing guests to wake up to the morning calls of endemic birds and the gentle rustle of the forest.

Earth Trip Opinion

In our opinion, Dounia Forest Lodge represents the pinnacle of remote eco-tourism in Madagascar. We include it in our specialist itineraries for those who want to truly “disconnect” and experience the island’s biodiversity in its most raw and beautiful form.

What makes Dounia unique is the seamless transition between the dense rainforest and the ocean. It is rare to find a property that offers such high standards of comfort while maintaining such a deep respect for the surrounding wilderness. For the discerning traveler, it provides a sense of peace and exclusivity that is difficult to replicate elsewhere on the island.

Sustainability & Community

Dounia Forest Lodge is a model for community-integrated conservation. The lodge works closely with neighboring villages to provide employment and support local education initiatives. At Earth Trip, we value their commitment to protecting the adjacent forest through active reforestation and anti-poaching patrols. By staying here, our guests directly contribute to the preservation of this vital habitat and the well-being of the people who call it home.
