Udawalawe National Park: The Untamed Kingdom of Elephants

Udawalawe National Park is arguably the best place in Asia to witness wild Asian Elephants in their natural habitat. Spanning over 30,000 hectares of dry-zone grasslands and scrub jungle, the park was created to provide a sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir. Today, it serves as a vital corridor for roaming herds. With its open plains reminiscent of the African savanna, Udawalawe offers unobstructed views and incredible photographic opportunities, making it a cornerstone of any Sri Lankan wildlife itinerary.

Experience Highlights

  • Guaranteed Elephant Sightings: Unlike other parks where sightings can be seasonal, Udawalawe is home to a permanent population of approximately 600 to 700 elephants. It is almost impossible to go on a safari here without encountering multiple herds, often including mothers with playful calves bathing in the muddy shallows of the reservoir.

  • The “Savanna” Safari Experience: The park’s vegetation consists largely of tall grasses and scattered thorny shrubs rather than dense forest. This open landscape provides superior visibility, allowing you to spot wildlife from a distance and observe natural behaviors—such as bulls sparring or matriarchs leading their herds to water—with ease.

  • A Birdwatcher’s Paradise: The combination of vast grasslands and the massive reservoir attracts a stunning array of avian life. From the regal Crested Serpent Eagle perched on dead trees to the vibrant Blue-tailed Bee-eaters darting through the air, Udawalawe is a critical site for both endemic and migratory species.

Key Wildlife & Nature to Spot

  • Mammals: Beyond the elephants, look for the Water Buffalo, Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer, Black-naped Hare, and the elusive Jungle Cat. While leopards are present, they are much harder to spot here than in Yala or Wilpattu.

  • Reptiles: Huge Land Monitors and Water Monitors are common, along with Mugger Crocodiles basking on the banks of the reservoir.

  • Birdlife: Home to the Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Changeable Hawk-Eagle, and various storks, herons, and kingfishers.

Expert Note: A Message from Aleem

“I have visited almost every national park in Sri Lanka, but Udawalawe remains one of my personal favorites because of its consistency and atmosphere. Having lived in the UK for over 25 years, I know our guests appreciate reliability and high standards. I personally inspect our safari operations here every year to ensure our jeep drivers are not just ‘drivers,’ but skilled naturalists who respect the animals’ space.

In Udawalawe, the ‘African Savanna’ feel is real. I always recommend a late afternoon safari; as the sun begins to set over the reservoir, the light becomes magical, and the elephants emerge from the shade in great numbers. It is a seamless, soulful experience that I have vetted to meet the highest European expectations.”

Visiting Hours & Best Time to Visit

  • Opening Hours: The park is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

  • Ideal Timing: Morning safaris (6:00 AM) are best for birdlife, while afternoon safaris (3:00 PM) are superior for elephant sightings as they congregate at the water’s edge.

  • Best Time to Visit: Udawalawe is a fantastic year-round destination. However, the dry season (May to September) is particularly rewarding as animals cluster around the dwindling water sources.

Other Popular Experiences Nearby

  • Elephant Transit Home (ETH): Located just outside the park, this is a must-visit to see orphaned calves being rehabilitated for release.

  • Sankapala Raja Maha Viharaya: An ancient rock temple nearby with fascinating history and cave paintings.
