Mulkirigala Rock Temple: The “Little Sigiriya” of the South
Often referred to as Punchi Sigiriya (Little Sigiriya), the Mulkirigala Raja Maha Vihara is a breathtaking ancient rock temple perched atop a 200-metre-high natural rock in the southern plains. While less famous than its northern counterpart, Mulkirigala is significantly older—dating back to the 3rd century BC. This archaeological marvel consists of a series of seven tiered caves carved into the rock face, connected by hundreds of ancient stone steps. Surrounded by lush coconut groves and emerald forests, a climb to the summit offers not only spiritual serenity but also one of the most magnificent panoramic views in the Southern Province.
Experience Highlights
-
The Five Tiered Compounds: The temple is organized into five distinct compounds—Siyambalamaluwa, Lower Vihara, Bomaluwa, Royal Temple, and the Upper Temple. As you ascend, each level reveals new treasures, from the massive 14-metre reclining Buddha in the Paduma Rahat Vihara to the serene white stupa that crowns the very peak of the rock.
-
Ancient Murals and Frescoes: Step inside the cool, dimly lit caves to discover walls and ceilings adorned with remarkably preserved paintings from the Kandyan era. These vivid murals depict “Jataka stories” (episodes from the life of the Buddha) and traditional Sri Lankan motifs, showcasing the artistic transitions of the island over centuries.
-
The “Adam’s Berg” Legend: During the 18th century, Dutch colonialists were so impressed by the site that they dubbed it “Adam’s Berg.” Legend has it they believed the tombs of Adam and Eve were hidden within the rock’s ancient depths, adding a layer of European mystery to this sacred Buddhist site.
Key Wildlife & Nature to Spot
-
Endemic Avifauna: The surrounding mixed forest is a haven for birds. Keep an eye out for the Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Crimson-fronted Barbet, and the Yellow-fronted Barbet. The quiet, morning air often carries the rhythmic calls of these forest residents.
-
The Resident Macaques: Playful Toque Macaques (endemic to Sri Lanka) are often seen on the lower levels. While charming to watch, they are opportunistic—keep a close eye on your belongings!
-
Giant Squirrels & Monitors: Look for the Grizzled Giant Squirrel leaping through the canopy and large Land Monitors occasionally crossing the paths near the base of the rock.
Visiting Hours & Best Time to Visit
The temple is open daily, but timing is key for a comfortable climb:
-
Ideal Timing: To avoid the midday heat, we recommend starting your climb in the early morning (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM) or in the late afternoon (after 4:00 PM). The sunset from the summit is particularly spectacular.
-
Dress Code: As this is a sacred site, please ensure your shoulders and knees are covered. You will be required to remove your shoes before entering the temple compounds.
-
Peak Season: The best weather for visiting the South is between December and April, when the skies are clear and the stone steps are dry.
